Resolve v15.0.0.086 (macOS) cannot open a specific MTS file

PostFri Aug 17, 2018 9:58 pm

Hi all,

First time user, first time poster. Not a pro by any stretch.

I was excited to see how slick DaVinci Resolve 15 behaves, after being really snappy to load up. However, I'm having a weird problem that all the MTS files that I extracted from my AVCHD BDMV container load, except ONE. The last file in the sequence that contains the ending. The source camera is a Canon Vixia HF R40.

Hardware/software specs:
Code: Select all
Running DaVinci Resolve v15.0.0.086 (macOS/Clang)
Detected model 'MacBookPro11,5'
Detected OS 'macOS 10.12.6 (16G1510)'
Detected uptime 440807s
Single GPU machine = Yes
GPU Name = 'AMD Radeon R9 M370X', Main display = 1
GPU Name = 'Intel Iris Pro', Main display = 0
2 GPUs (excluding display GPU) found. Using OpenCL for processing.
GLmap capable. GPUs: 1 discrete, 1 integrated, 0 external. Auto mapping, OpenCL processing, main display not on external GPU.

Error from the davinci_resolve.log file (timing columns removed)
Code: Select all
Failed to open video file </{filename}.MTS> for decoding, error: <File does not exist, or file format is not recognizable.>
Failed to read video track information from file <{filename}.MTS> in {foldername}, track 0: codec DUMMY is not supported

What can I do to enable Resolve to open this MTS file? All the other MTS files open fine.

Thanks!
-Tony

So for the time being I imported the one file into HitFilm Express (with the Formats: Starter Pack installed) and exported the file as Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) (MOV). This worked fine, and for my project the quality difference is virtually invisible. However, it would be great to know what caused Resolve to choke on this file. Is there some way I can analyze an MTS to spot potential differences?

Can you post link to it, so I can try?

Hi Uli!

Sorry for the delay; I haven't been on the forum since last week. Here's a link to the video file in question. I'll remove link access after I finish editing the video:
https://ln.sync.com/dl/96d5f8ad0/wrx5xp ... 2-f8xkn97h

[Also, I had problems with using the exported version from Hitfilm: the export converted to a MOV file 8 times the size of the invalid file, and the conversion lost a large chunk of the ending.]

Thanks,
-Tony

Resolve doesn't see to like that combination of video and audio, one can re-wrap the video into mov and transcode the sound separately into PCM and it will be read.

It seems there was a problem with that specific file, since it had a few bad frames after several minutes.

P.S. I had the chance to download your other test file and it is read without a problem by Resolve. The format is identical, so I think it was just bad luck and you've got a damaged file in the other case.
