Best way to set up project for 5.1 delivery

PostSat Aug 25, 2018 2:01 am

In Resolve Studio 15, what is the best way to configure Fairlight for 5.1 delivery. I would need to be able to do the full 5.1 mix, but then output printmasters and stems (DME, M&E, etc.) for both stereo and 5.1. The manual/user guide doesn't go into enough detail on how to do this and I'm having a hard time getting it work right. (There's a lot of stuff missing from the manual actually)

Juan Salvo did a tutorial, and it now works for me;
https://player.vimeo.com/video/285365485

once i got it to work (with significant help from an angel) i made all sorts of timeline with the audio mapped, and a slate to match, and keep them in my project template, i'd allow maybe an hour to get it up and tested carefully

i downloaded the video and went through it step -by - step -by- step, and still help was really apprecated

all i have to do now is pullup the template timeline, add the audio source tracks in the right place, add the color timed master picture to the timeline and let it export away.

hopefully will never need to go through the mapping again, so in that light doing it once, being very very careful and checking it three times, then saveing the timeline and re-useing it when mastering, the time it took was worthwhile

but yea, i also found the documentation to be absoultly abysmal, 2600+ pages and the manual is beyond worthless on this subject

Hi,

There are several solutions :)

You create your tracks in the EDIT tab (5.1 / monos / stereo, etc ...)
You go in the tab Fairlight => Bus format
you create as much output as you want in the desired format.
Bus_Format.jpg

In the Fairlight tab:
You click each track to assign the channels to the desired output Submix:
You can pan the channels as desired
All towards 5.1 and for DME or ME the desired tracks
Assign_chanel_to_desired_SUB.jpg

To listen to the SUB 5.1 only you activate SUB 5_1 to Main
To listen to the SUB DME only you activate DME to Main
To listen to the SUB ME only you activate ME to Main
(or several SUB at the same time is possible)

Delivery page:
Audio tab: you request the export of 3 sub at the same time or one by one

i think the LAST thing anyone delivering a show with a mix done by say Pinewood or any other first class mix facility wants to do is risk haveing to adust panning to get a clean output

we really want to let the mix flow through untouched

this point seems to be a bit lost on folks who do not deliver masters to QC

Juan gets the big picture, his workflow is as clean and safe as seems possiable given the basic mess f'duplight is

No need to pan if you use the Fairlight > Link Group feature. I prefer that to using clip attributes like Juan does in the tutorial.

HI

You prefer what Juan proposes: it is respectable but I prefer mine (and that of many others) because it has more potentiality.

Thank you for the tips. How do you handle a sound effect that you want to move say from front to back or back to front?

Of course, there is no need to change routing as the Monitoring Menu in the Fairlight Meters Panel provides the required option to quickly listen to any Source isolated, be it a Main, Sub-Mix or Aux Buss.

If the Meters Panel is closed, the Monitoring Menu is still available beside the Monitoring functions.
