Grading an AAF

PostThu Sep 06, 2018 2:39 pm

Disclaimer* Im fairly new to the studio version of Resolve, and this is the first time Im grading an AAF from Avid.

I finished the grade for a project, then client asked for one more round of changes. If I export an AAF from avid replacing the AAF file I already graded in DV, will it maintain the original graded clips in the Davinci project, and simply add the new clips or would I be blowing away my grade completely? I assume the latter...

Couple of ways to go... create a new Resolve project and use ColorTraceTM to migrate your original correction to the new version, or export your revised AAF with a REV01 tag in the name and bring it into your original Resolve project as a second timeline, which should behave pretty much as an automatic update, or use the new pancake Edit mode to isolate the revisions and incorporate in the old version.

Backup, backup, backup.

Thank you! Color trace sounds like the winner.
This also sounds like the most efficient way to copy a grade to an alternate version of a similar sequence that uses much of the same media? I assume it does the color trace by clip name? Even if I/O points are different?
Thanks again!

I color correct my own films, so I usually start before I have a picture lock, so I'm kind used to going through this...

What works for me is I use the 'remote version' as opposed to 'local version' grades preference. This way all my corrections are applied to the clip at the media pool level (or something like that), that way any instance of that clip anywhere in the project will have the same correction.

If I need different looks for the same clip for other instances, I create adicional version.

So let say a grade might be called by default 'Remote Version 1' and lets say I have a flashback scene later on in which that same clip reappears but now needs to be black and white, that grade might be called 'Remote Version 2'... And for each instance I could toggle the corrections from one to the other because resolve recognizes them as been the same clip, even if I'm using different portions of it.

I might not be explaining it correctly... It's easier than it sounds... Give it a try.

To do it you would have to copy all local grades to remote (theres a command for that.

And duplicate your project before trying it, in case you want to go back to the way things were.
