Portable SSD for 4K Video Editing?

PostThu Sep 27, 2018 1:14 pm

Which portable SSD for 4K Video Editing can you recommend?
I have a Macbook Pro 15 "Touch / Mid-2017 Core i7, 2.9GHz 16GB RAM, 4 ports Thunderbold 3, 512GB or onboard flash storage. Dual graphics processors - an AMD Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB or dedicated GDDR5 memory and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 630 graphics processor that shares memory with the system.

I would like an external ssd that is easy to travel with and I can edit the videos on it. And when I finish them, I move over to a 3TB lacie thunderbolt 2 disk at home.

Michal, when and if it’s available in your region, I’d recommend you take a look at the Wise Portable SSD or the Wise CINEMA SSD from Wise Advanced. They both are developed with video applications in mind and not as the general purpose SSD devices that other well-known manufacturers offer. Wise claims they are able to handle 4K60p raw. The Portable is due to be released in October. Write speeds up to 520MB/s. Capacities up to 1TB.

I use two Wise CFast 2 256GB cards but I’m considering adding one of these SSDs to pair with the BMPCC4K in October.

BMD will be releasing their approved media for the BMPCC4K in a few days. Best practice to go with their recommendations of course.

Remember that speed isn’t the only criteria; it’s also affected by the onboard data controller and how well it manages video which is different than data. Some reviewers and manufacturers also test with video now, but they’re often short on the details.

BMD tests more thoroughly that most of us would although there are possibly several brands that will also work but BMD may not have been able to test them or they’re still in the queue.

Thank you very much both
Sorry, I first respond now. Had forgotten to set up so I was notified when there was an answer.

I have thought of NVMe SSD and Samsung T5 Portable SSD.

The Patriot EVLVR Thunderbolt 3 External SSD 512GB is now very hot, but it is not available in Europe.
Are there any stores in the United States where you can go in and buy it?

I'm going on my very first trip to USA with my wife and her son at the age of 16 (It's my 50th birthday gift from my wife.) In October 7 to 24. Starting with 5.5 days in Los Angeles and so on to Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite National Park and ending in San Francisco.

Is Wice Better Than Samsung T5 Portable SSD? Samsung Read-Write speeds of up to 540 MB / s

Can not get a "build one yourself" to Thunderbolt 3
