Simple Audio Track Question

PostThu Sep 27, 2018 2:17 pm

How do I create a new audio track in a new file that has no tracks in it? I want to open a clean new file, create an audio track, patch to it and start recording audio.

Thanks

you would do this in the fairlight page in a timeline not directly to a file
MBP2021 M1 Max 64GB, macOS 15.1, Resolve Studio 19.1 build 12
Output: UltraStudio 4K Mini, Desktop Video 12.7

That makes sense, but it's hard to figure out how to do it. As far as I can tell, there is no command to "create a new track" or "add a track" in either the Edit or the Fairlight page when you have a completely empty timeline.

I think there are going to be people who want to use the free version of Resolve as a standalone DAW for recording music or dialog without any video associated with it.

Maybe one workaround is to add any audio file to your Media Pool and drag it into the timeline to create a track. From there you can add tracks and delete that initial one.

it's not possible to have a timeline with no audio or video tracks in Resolve, if you aren't seeing anything there then there is no timeline in the first place.

Got it -- I edited my message above as you were writing this one to say that one workaround would be to add any audio track you have handy to the media pool and drop it into the timeline to create a track. Then add more tracks as needed and delete the scratch audio track once you've done that.

Much quicker and simpler to use the “New Timeline” shortcut and specify audio track counts and track configuration within its dialog. Page 90 of the user manual outlines this.

Creating a new timeline and saving it as "Blank Audio" was the answer I found later. Pulling in a project and deleting the tracks not needed works too. And YES, Fairlight is now more than capable for my radio DJ needs, working on 8 track recording of my friend's Bluegrass band even up to recording an old fan and modifying it to make a spaceship drone...so long Reaper.

Thanks again,
