Node effects only work when unmix is on?

I have a text title which I have added some nodes with effects to and when I preview them they only work correctly if the unmix button is pressed. When on the timeline or if I render they do not work correctly. The first image I have attached is what I don't want and the second is the effect I'm going for. Please help.

Is the Text a generator or is it an actual piece of video? If it's a generator, I believe you need to make it a compound clip in order to pull a composite inside it (as I see in your diagram).
