6G-SDI compatibility?

PostSun Apr 14, 2013 1:33 pm

I was wondering if I am able to use a normal SDI Monitor for my upcoming BMPC?
Is it fully compatible?

My understanding is that 6G-SDI is downwardly compatible with HD-SDI equipment. Wouldn't make sense otherwise. Of course, non-BMD HD-SDI gear won't be able to handle 6G-SDI specific functionality, but the devices will be able to do together what HD-SDI has always done.

A fun wrinkle in this is that BMD announced at NAB this past week that some of their recent products can be 6G-SDI enabled via a forthcoming firmware update. I don't believe they specified which of their existing/previous products have this capability. We may have to wait & see.

Confirmation from BMD will be good, but I'd be surprised if BMD 6G-SDI capable devices won't continue to work with conventional HD-SDI devices, within the capabilities of the latter. Cheers.

Yes you will be able to. You can switch between 1080 and Ultra HD 4K output on the SDI output of the 4K camera.

Hi, Kristian - just to double check; does this mean you can send 1080 out via SDI while you're actually recording 4K? Thanks!

Sure, you'll often monitor (or record) externally @ 1920 x 1080 while recording @ 4K internally. At least I'd hope so!

It must be that way because I don't know if any external monitors can accept 6G SDI today. The Flanders can take 3G though a dual-link I believe but they only support up to 2K video now I believe.

Yes, this is correct as we don't think most EVFs / external monitors will be 6G-SDI compatible for now. :)
