Recommendations Wanted: Filter Set for BM Cameras

PostMon Apr 15, 2013 6:09 pm

So I know this has been talked about on other threads in bits and pieces, but for all of us who are waiting on our pre-order cameras, and are starting to plan/build out our kits, I'd love some feedback on what we'll need.

For this thread, I'd love to hear what people are recommending as a BASIC FILTER SET (NDs, IR, etc.). What brand/size are you using? Would you recommend them?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thx!

PS - If this has already been covered in another thread, my bad.

I don´t have a IR filter yet, but i always keep in my set a ND6 and a ND9, a Polarizer and a screw on ND Fader by Heliopan that is extremely useful for run and gun.

Other than camera (sensor) specific "infrared pollution" related considerations, BMD cameras are not different concerning filters.

EDIT: I use a 77mm Hoya IR/UV cut filter with my BMPC-4K.

My Hoya ProND filters are more nuetral (little or no color cast) than my Tiffen ND filters (which are slightly greenish), which why I prefer the ProNDs.

I also sometimes use 4x4 glass filters (Tiffen polarizer, graduated ND, white net, etc.) in my matte box.

I've heard very good things about the Genus Eclipse & (more expensive) Heliopan vari-NDs. I've had very poor results with the LCW vari-ND (do not buy), and will probably replace it with the Eclipse.

There are infinite discussions of filters online. For example, here are a few excellent posts by David Mullen, ASC:

I bought an LCW fader and hated it from day one... what a mistake. Then i bought a Heliopan Vari ND and my faith in variable nd circular filters was restored. I still prefer to use my 4x4 ND because there´s always a polarizing effect with the Vari ND that can affect skin tones negatively.
