Unable to Launch Davinci Resolve Project Server

PostMon Mar 04, 2019 9:56 pm

I'm trying to setup a collaborative workflow using Davinci Resolve Studio, 15.2.4.006, having also installed DaVinci Resolve Project Server on a Mac Pro and MacBook Pro both running OSX Mojave. The Project Server launches on the Mac Pro just fine, allowing me to setup a shared database. However, upon launching the Project Server on the MB Pro, it shows an error that reads:

"Davinci Resolve Project Server connection error. The PostgresSQL server is either not running or the password is incorrect."

The only option is to quit out of the application.

Any recommendations on what to do next?

Typically, you only need to run Project Server on one machine: the machine that will be your central database server.

If Project Server won't launch on your other machine, the most likely reason is that PostgreSQL is not running.

The most likely reason for that would be that the system had PostgreSQL 8.4 on it, and you updated the OS past Yosemite without following the Resolve database upgrade procedure in the release notes since Resolve 12.5.2.

You can see if PostgreSQL is running by opening the Activity Monitor, setting the View mode to All Processes, and sorting on the Process Name column and looking in the P's area for multiple postgres processes running. If there are none, it's not running. Look in Mac Applications folder to see what, if any, PostgreSQL versions are installed. If there is a PostgreSQL 8.4 and not a PostgreSQL 9.5, and you are running Sierra or higher, that won't work.

I am having this same issue on my Laptop.

I do most of my work on my MacPro, but I figured it would be cool to edit from the comfort of my laptop without having to go to my basement where my Mac Pro workstation is.

I just updated my Mac Pro to High Sierra this past weekend and also just 15.3 installed. Today was the first time I ever installed the postgreSQL files using the installer. I was able to get the Mac Pro up and running and create a new postgreSQL database on it.

I tried connecting the macbook pro to the database I created on the mac pro and had no luck. I then tried installing the postgreSQL files using the installer on the laptop and was able to do so, but when I opened it up I got this same error. I have never run this application before, and do not see it in the activity monitor, so I am not sure what I need to do.

If I DO NOT need to run the Resolve Project Server on my laptop to connect, what am I doing wrong that I can't get my laptop to connect?

Thanks,
Ben

Do you have the Studio version on the laptop?
You need Studio to connect to a remote PostGres DB.

Yes I do. I am running Studio on both machines.

I read through the manual about this topic and it makes it seem like this should be a very simple setup.

1. Create a database using Project Server
2. Create an access key
3. Open the access key on a separate computer that is connected to the original machine and you are in

I have done all of those things and yet I still get an error and I am told to look at the LOG, which is way beyond my reading comprehension. I am not an IT guy. I'm not a code guy. I wish it truly was a simple setup.

Following up on the original post that started this thread, I've not really tried to fix the issue with the MB Pro not launching the Project Server as it seems immaterial to my objective to access the Project Server stored on my Mac Pro. I have been able to successfully connect to the server, but only over WiFi and not via ethernet. Summary of my effort to date is below:

I'm trying to connect to a PostgreSQL database over a LAN consisting of a 2012 Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro, both running OSX Mojave and Davinci Resolve 15.2.4.006. They are connected via ethernet through a switch. The Project Server is installed on the Mac Pro. A ping test initiated from either computer using the other computer's ethernet IP address is successful.

After many attempts to connect the MB Pro to the shared database, I continue to get the error message "Failed to connect to the database. Please check log file for more details." I have tried to add the shared database both by clicking the "new database" button in the Project Manager and manually typing in the Name & Location fields as well as by creating an access key via the Project Server application.

However, I am able to connect to the database via our wifi network, which is completely separate from the switch connecting the two machines together.

What should I try next?

Assuming you are using Project Server somewhere and generating access keys, open the access key file in a text editor (TextEdit on Mac) and see what the IP address is. If its the WiFi address, the simplest solution is to Disable Sharing on any shared databases, then turn off the WiFi port, then Share the datbase(s) and generate new access keys. Verify that the access key now contains the wired connection IP address.
