Advanced Panel firmware not installed

PostWed Apr 17, 2019 2:57 pm

Hello BMD,
Installed 16.0b1 on a CentOS 7.3 system with Advanced Panels attached.

Resolve 16 does not seem to detect the Advanced Panels. Reinstalling the software didn't help either. No blinking lights during the install or first-time Resolve launch.

In the past, when we had firmware issues due to Resolve downgrades/upgrades, I would run bmdpaneld and power cycle the panels.

In this case, this is what I get:
Code: Select all
[root@localhost bin]# /opt/resolve/bin/bmdpaneld

Is there a way to force update the firmware?

Thanks in advance!

USB extenders may cause issues with the panel fw update. Please connect the panels locally to the PC with a 12' or less USB cable.

Can the panels still be used with Resolve 15 after the firmware update?

@Jerome: Testing here, I have the same issue with the panels directly connected. So it's not the extender causing this.

Researching further...

It's broke in the current release. Fix hopefully coming in the next release.

To expound a bit, the Advanced Panels require new panel firmware to work in Resolve 16. The Linux version is not performing that firmware update. So the panels don't work in 16 on Linux.

If you have a Windows or Mac system you can put 16 on, that will update the panel firmware, and then the panels will work with Linux 16.

If you want to use the panels in 15 again, they will need a firmware update for that. The Windows version will definitely perform that. I haven't verified that the Mac version does, but since it works going to 16, it should work going back to 15. Only MAC! See below post.

Hello,

I am running Mac OSX 10.13.6 on an imac Pro 2017 and also seem to have this issue.
Resolve does not detect my Advanced Panels.
I have run the beta installer twice. Neither time did I see anything specifically saying panel firmware was updating. Should it?

Greatly appreciate any help, thank you.

Yes, you should see a window updating the panel firmware.

In Resolve Preferences, set the panel type to None. Save the prefs and restart Resolve. Then set the panel type to Advanced, save the prefs and restart Resolve. Do you get a panel firmware update window now?

That did it. Firmware installed and panels working in Resolve.

Thanks a bunch, Dwaine!

So glad I found this thread just now. I just had to revert back to 15.3.1 from 16b3 due to an apparent inability to render anything with the "cinemascope" option ticked (renders failing w/gpu error 77 dialogs) and in going back to the release I lost my panels with no idea how to bring them back to life.

My panels were updated for 16 with the 16b2 installer on Centos 7.3

After re-installing 15.3.1 the panels were dead and Resolve was not prompting me to do a firmware download.

Then I found this thread, and thus attached my panels directly to the mac I have in the suite and launched 15.3.1 there. A firmware update dialogue presented itself. I ran it. It failed.

I then grabbed our Lightspace/Calman laptop which is a PC, installed resolve 15.3.1, attached the panels directly to that, and the panels lit right up. No firmware update required...

I've now attached the panels back to the linux system via the extender, launched 15.3.1, disbaled panels, relaunched and re-enabled per these well known steps, and I have now got the panels back working in 15.3.1 on linux.

I can breath again now. Clients coming in at 9am :o

thank you Dwaine for taking the time to "expound" as you said, earlier in this thread. You saved my night!

I hope someone high up at BMD might get linked to this thread and consequently allow Dwaine or whomever to document some of these known facts regarding troubleshooting with the advanced panels. I also really wish things like firmware updates that break compatibility with previous versions and firmware updates that can only be successfully loaded from certain platforms, etc were described and detailed thoroughly and explicitly in the release notes if nowhere else!

Just to update a bit:

16b2 fixed the issue of Linux not updating the panel firmware.

And my statement that Windows 15 systems would revert 16 panel fw to 15 was incorrect.

If you have Advanced panels that have had Resolve 16 fw installed, the ONLY way to get them back to Resolve 15 fw, is to connect them to a Mac system running Resolve 15.

Neither Windows or Linux systems running Resolve 15 have the ability to install Resolve 15 fw in Advanced panels that have been updated to 16 fw.

Hi Dwaine,

Searching around for an answer to a question I posted today and came across this thread. I updated from 15 to 16 today and it showed that it successfully updated the firmware on my advanced panel, but now the right panel looks pixelated/wonky...Tried to power cycle everything, tried disabling the advanced panel in preferences and then re-enabling...nothing worked...So I'm curious if you think it would be worth connecting to a mac on 15 to get the old firmware installed and then re-attach to the windows machine with 16? Would it then do the firmware update again automatically?

I found this thread, because I too, am having this issue. I updated to 17.1 on Linux, and my Advanced Panels have gone away. I tried the trick using a Mac update to 17.1 with the panels connected. The Mac sees them fine.

I tried connecting them cakewalked to Linux, and nothing. Tried restarting, tried several relaunches. No change.

Any ideas?

There are no Advanced Panel firmware changes from 16 to 17.

What did you update to 17 from?

From 15 to 16, there IS a panel firmware update, and if it doesn't happen, the panels won't be seen in 16 or 17.

If the panels still work in 15, they did not update.

I've seen that happen a few times on Linux. The easiest solution would be to connect to them to a Mac running Resolve 16 or 17, and that will normally do the panel update.

Gotcha. I did try that; connecting to a Mac running 17.1. The panels connected fine on the Mac. I didn’t see a specific firmware update screen though. When I reconnected to Linux, the panels didn’t connect, and there was no option for Advanced Panels in Preferences.

Wait. What? No Advanced Panel selection in Resolve Preferences - System - Control Panels?

That would mean you have the free version of Resolve installed, which does not have Advanced Panel support.

Yes, I think I downloaded the non-Studio version. Trying the proper download now.
