Tripod - Sachtler FSB 6 vs. Ace L

PostThu May 16, 2013 12:13 pm

Any recommendations for the BMCC? Im not sure if the Sachtler fsb 6 is worth the money over the Ace L.
The weight capacity should be the same.
I think the FSB 6 is over 2 years old now, while the AceL was released at NAB this year.
So "old" vs. "new".
...omg I hate those decisions :)
thanks for your help

While I respect Sachtler's product line, three drag settings is not enough in my book. The FSB 8 is more like it. 5 steps of drag. Even that I wish it were more defined, but the cost of getting additional drag settings gets real expensive. The fsb 6 with 3, actually 2 since I dont think setting 0 should really count!

I would go for the FSB6 if money wasn't as issue, as the Ace is more plasticy. I haven't seen the Ace L.

Having said that the Ace in nice, light, affordable, so check them both out, in the hands, and choose the one which feels right.

I'm a huge fan of Sachtler and have several DV2 and a DV4 from the previous generation.

But let's see....maybe I'll post a short review tomorrow. I hope it was the right decision.

For my experience I had Sachtler DV6 SB and I sold it for FSB8. Same model but with a few devices like a Sideload technology ...I love it. The same Manfrotto or Sachtler plate are fully compatible. I have some Manfrotto head on the Kessler Slider or Kessler Pocket Jib and with one plate you play with whole.
Than the fluid head is very sturdy and very well made. Costarica home building seems the same German made. ;) I.m very satisfied with this head. I was uncertain whether to take the Miller Compass 15 but but I think I've done the best.

Got my Sachtler Ace L today!
What shall I say.....pretty damn good!
lightweight, smooth, 7 step counterbalance...
And although the head is more plasticy, the built quality is extremely well! Its so well made that its sometimes difficult to say if its plastic or metal. Also the carbon sticks are awesome!

Hi, the point is that I'm very very happy with my Ace L but I've never used a FSB6. But I can't believe that its smoother - but I don't know.

Here is the first video which I made with the Sachtler Ace L:
(Every shot from 0:00 - 1:10 was filmed with the Sachtler. The interesting Sachtler part starts at 1:42 :) )

(I also used a Glidecam-HD2000. Shot on a Panasonic GH3 and 3 Rokinon/Samyang Primes)
