Resolve Crash On Startup

Hi everyone,

I'm having some real problems as Resolve crashes on start up almost every time and infrequently makes it to the opening project page, only to crash. The crash seems to normally occur on the 'looking for Control Surface' loading page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running the following:
Dell Precision 5820, Intel i7-9800X @3.8GHz (8 core), 48GB Ram (2x8GB and 2x16), NVidia Quadro P400 2GB (Version 431.40 - although I have also tried 436.30 but the same crashing occured) running Windows 10 Pro. I completely understand that the Quadro is not powerful enough for serious editing but it should, I would think, still at least load Resolve and function on a basic level. My plan is to upgrade at the point where I really know what I'm doing with Resolve but I can't even load it yet!

I have so far tried
Multiple Resolve 16 installs and uninstalls (including using the suggested Windows uninstaller from the troubleshooting)
Davinci Resolve 15 (just to test if it was a version 16 issue)
Running the program in administrator mode (it's always been run on an admin account anyway)
Installing Resolve in a location other than the default (suggested in another crash startup post)
Run everything with the Windows Firewall turned off (suggest in troubleshooting)

The capture log fails to capture anything saying "could not create output file" (see photo)
The DXDiag lists no problems

Other Info
I'm running an RME Fireface for audio - drivers are up to date and no known issues
The only other things on this computer are Pro Tools and a variety of audio plugins although none of these have been running during the Resolve install or startup problems.
I have a Presonus Faderport 8 control surface installed but, again, not running on startup.

Any help would be really appreciated and thanks for taking the time to read the post.

Are you using this method to run CaptureLogs:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

Can you also run Windows System Information, then do a File - Save, and provide a link to the .NFO file, and to your dxdiag dump file?

And in reference to Sulo's comment above, you don't need to install CUDA. Resolve has what it needs in the NVIDIA driver.

Hi guys I had the same issue this morning.

I'm running Windows 10 64bit Enterprise on an Intel Xeon W-2125 @ 4GHz with 32Gb of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 1080.

Came in today and Resolve crashed on startup.
Installed v16.1 beta, still crashing.
Reinstalled v16, crashing.
Updated drivers: crashing.
Back to work drivers: crashing....
Renamed presets folders: casues the initial setup on startup, then crashing....
Restarted the PC several times in the process.

I did eventually close the Epic Games Store (which started on startup and was installed before the weekend), and had another crash...

So thought nothing of it. But shortly after, I restarted Resolve to get info from dbmon, and surprisingly, Resolve started. Not saying the two are related, but maybe.

I was able to dig up my old database on C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\
And found my projects. Reconnected to that database folder thanks to these 2 Dwaine posts:

...and I'm back up an running.

Not sure what was causing the crash on loading screen, Maybe epic game store, maybe not. I did generate CaptureLog files if Dwaine wants to take a peek.

I'm in the same boat. The only difference is I had a 16b running on my system but hadn't really used it. Had to do all sorts of stuff just to remove the 16b version so I could install 15 studio.

Uninstall Process:
Boot In Safemode
Reinstall Resolve 16b
Restart
Uninstall Resolve 16b
Remove left over 16b install files with CC Cleaner
Boot in Win 10 normal mode
Install Resolve 15
Install BRAW 1.5 update

nothing opens.

Now, on a fresh install with no projects or databases to deal with, I launch Resolve, it loads the splash screen and closes when it gets to "Searching for Control Surfaces". The process shows loading and then disappears.

I have tried some suggestions of selecting an audio device (I am using a USB Audio Interface) but that did not work.

My System:
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor 3.2GHz
32GB RAM
Win 10 Home 64bit

I am able to get it to launch if I reboot with "windows audio" service turned off in msconfig and then reboot. Went through the arduous process of turning on and off services, until windows audio was isolated. Problem is, it launches, but you have no audio.

Had it again this morning with 16.1.1.

Once again, I removed DaVinci Resolve (software, prefs, moved database folders).

Kept crashing on start up.

I removed Davinci Resolve again, and made sure to also remove the DaVinci Resolve Keyboards, and the DaVinci Resolve Panels.

Then went to my C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\
Also dumped the DaVinci folders in C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design

This time it started.

I was able to then reconnect the databases using the "Project Manager"
Click on "New Database"
Use the "Connect" Tab
Connecting my old database.
If reconnecting an old database doesn't work (I had 2, one didn't work), create a new one, and close Resolve.
Then copy the Projects folder from the old database into the new database location.
The default db was here: C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\Resolve Projects\Users\guest\
Mine was here since I keep them on a different drive: D:\DaVinci_Database_Original\Resolve Projects\Users\guest\

Hey everyone,

The solution to my initial issue was around connecting USB hubs and hardware that could be used as a control surface.

My crashes occur when I have either my Presonus Faderport or my Novation Impulse 61 plugged in via a USB hub and not directly in to the computer.

My guess is that is crashes on the 'searching for control surface' screen because it looks for a surface, finds something that could work as a surface in other software (Pro Tools, Ableton Live etc) but doesn't register properly in Resolve. It gets confused and then crashes.

I don't know whether this helps but thought it worth feeding back just in case.

It was a USB device causing my hang-up!

It's April 7, 2020, COVID-19 work from home time. I've been doing a lot of online, Zoom and BlueJeans, video conference calls with a decade-old Logitech USB headphones/boom mic unit I dug out of the bottom of a drawer. (I knew a time would come when I'd need it again... ) Plus my kids have been borrowing it for online classroom sessions on their laptops.

For a week Resolve has been acting whacky, and I've been wracking my brain, trying to figure out why it would sometimes start for me and other times would fail about 15 seconds into the splash screen. I've uninstalled and reinstalled at least 3 times, moved databases... and then, in desperation I came upon this thread.

After reading it I had this idea... I purposely unplugged the headset and Resolve launched fine. I quit, plugged the headset back in, an watched carefully as Resolve failed while still reporting, Looking for Control Surface. I switched Windows 10 OS users from an admin account to a standard user account. I performed the same experiment with the same results.

So, for me it was as simple as an old USB device tricking Resolve while it scanned for external controllers.

Wanted to put that out there in case anyone else was pulling their hair out during this strange time.

I really appreciate the USB hub tip because I recently bought a USB 3.0 hub and I've plugged in a new headset, keyboard and mouse and have been having crashing problems starting resolve ever since. I unplugged the headset and went with a non-wireless keyboard and Resolve started fine. I have no idea why this worked, I only care that it did so I might finish a project that should have been done yesterday.

Just to add on, I had been using Resolve on and off all day with no problem. I left my workstation and grabbed lunch, went to get my mail, and during that period of time my son plugged in his xbox controller in one of my PC's USB hubs to recharge. That's when I could no longer launch Resolve, it hung up at Looking for Control Surface. Lucking I found this thread, unplugged the controller, and Resolve started up.

Fusion Studio - is Crashing at the logo screen with the Boris FX "continuum" plugins installed. Open ticket with them. going nowhere. Any ideas? BMD can you reach out to them.. or is there a way to Exclude Fusion from some OFX plugins but not Davinci? - No issue inside Resolve or Fusion TAB in Resolve but Stand alone Studio on mac latest OS Freezing on title screen opening ofx plugins.. - Narrowed it down to - BCC_OFX_3D_Objects.ofx

It might be helpful to post this in the Fusion area of the Forum, instead of onto the end of a Resolve crashing thread.

I have the same problem, anyone have a solution for this?

i am having a similar issue where when i start he app even with admin it shows up in task manager becomes suspended and crashes i dont even make it to splash screen. The report for it is always "APPCRASH" and im not too sure what is happening im running a i7 9700k and RTX 3070 with the latest studio drivers i have tried with the game drivers also but still the same issue. please help i have been battling this for months and have resorted to doing my projects in other programs! i just want my davinci back i miss it .

Need a Resolve log as well.

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

That's not a Resolve log .zip file created by the process I described above. Please run CaptureLogs to create the log file.

Your config.dat file has become corrupt. There is a good backup copy.

Making sure you have File Explorer Options set to show hidden files and folders and known file extensions, go to this folder in File Explorer:

C:\Users\WillyOMA\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences

Delete the config.dat file.

Copy the config.dat.bak file. Just select that file and do a Ctrl-c. Then do a Ctrl-v to paste that copy.

You should now have a file called "config.dat - Copy.bak"

Rename that file to config.dat

Now Resolve should start. If it doesn't, send another Resolve log.

A week ago I installed Resolve 18 beta, when I opened it for the first time it ran smoothly without any problem but after a week I reopened it but it ended up getting crashed, it runs in the background as it is visible in the task manager.

I've tried changing compatibility, Disconnecting my USB and Bluetooth devices peripheral upgrading my graphics drivers but nothing helped. Not sure about what's exactly caused the crash.

If anybody has any idea to help me fix this, I generated the capture logs and .NFO files and attached them here.

Hello! I have version 18.1.4, and Resolve is also crashing during startup. It always happens in when its in the "launching projects" stage of the startup. I tried updating my NVIDIA GeForce MX330 driver version 511.69 with an intel core i7 CPU, and setting Resolve to a high priority in Task Manager while it was starting up, and I uninstalled and reinstalled it twice: once it my C:\Program Files and another time in C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming. My system type is a Windows x64-based PC and my RAM is 16.0 GB.

I have been having a ton of stability issues. recently it has started crashing on startup, or within seconds of opening a project. not always, but most of the time. it took 3 hours to edit and render a 15 second clip with all the crashes. i tried a couple of things but no change. here or the log files if i did it correctly.

Your issues appear related to not having enough GPU VRAM for whatever is going on in your projects.

Your RTX3060 Laptop GPU has 6GB of VRAM. All the Resolve crash logs are related to out of GPU memory errors.

If you are using a UHD/4K timeline resolution, and any heavy NR or OFX, that's likely the issue.

But...it doesn't seem like that's the issue. Looks like you are working with HD timelines, as best I can tell. Maybe doing something intense in Fusion? Or very high resolution source media, stacked on multiple video tracks? Or temporal NR with 5 frames selected with some combination of the above?

If you want to PM me a link to your project that starts with "working in s" I'd be curious to see what's going on with that. The GPU mem is exhausted the instant you load it.

that particular project was 17ish seconds of hd footage with one piece of plain text, and an animated logo using mr. alex tech magic animate preset.

i usually work with 6k braw footage. and often do fairly intense work on it. when i look at what my pc is doing it says it is using my intel graphix card rather than the nvidia. i have tried a few things to get windows to use the beefier card, but it just wont.

i managed to get a driver updated and it is running smooth now, but i am guessing this issue will crop back up next time anything gets updated. the vram does fill up quickly. and using optimised media, or proxies doesnt seem to change much. just fills up my HD while working a project. sounds like i need a better system...this system is much bigger than my previous system, but seems to struggle way more.

Experiencing crashes on Resolve as well and upgraded to v20 recently. It doesn't get past checking licenses.

Your Topaz OFX plugin is crashing Resolve.

To verify that's the issue, do the following:

Disable 3rd party OFX Plugins in Resolve for Windows

If 3rd party OFX plugins are causing Resolve not to start, do the following to troubleshoot:

In File Explorer, go to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX

In the OFX folder is a folder called Plugins

Rename the Plugins folder to Plugins.orig

Now Resolve should start.

In the Plugins folder will be folder for each OFX package you've installed. Move those out of the Plugins folder one at a time, to figure out which is causing the issue with Resolve.

Of course, change Plugins.orig back to Plugins when you do that.

It worked, had 2 folders from Topaz AI, removed them, after that it work's fine (ver20.beta2), tnx.
