timeline resolutions; scaling issue

PostMon Oct 07, 2019 9:33 pm

My question's regarding maintaining a timelines size settings when dropping into another timeline (similar to nested comps in premiere); here are the details -

I've got my "master comp" or main timeline at 1920x1080; and trying to drop in subsequent comps (timelines) that are set to 1920x360 - in hypothesis this allows me to easily split screen 3 shots on screen at once w/o having to crop the shots and where I can easily reframe a shot in its parent timeline. hence I have 1920x360 timelines for my horizontal split screen -

so why when I drop my 1920x360 timelines into my 1920x1080 timeline are they scaling up full screen and cropping frame left and right?

I've played with timeline settings to no avail - can anyone please provide insight to how Davinci is handling this process? I'm sure im doing something ignorant...

maybe my process is wrong so I'll tell you my goal is to have 3 shots on screen at once in a symmetrical horizontal split. id want this for vertical split screens to aka fitting 3 shots at once into a 1920x1080 comp.

thanks for your help, im transition into DaVinci after 6 years in premiere and 3 years in after effects. DaVinci is sweet!

original poster here and Ive figured out what to do. use color or fusion windows and draw rectangle masks to achieve the desired framing. back in the timeline editor adjust the x and/or y positions. actually very simple although not the specific workflow I was attempting first go 'round.

im happy to say I've been able to achieve my triple horizontal split screen, allowing me to animate across the x-axis and create a seamless flow of multiple shots from left to right and vice versa (basically stuffing 6 to 9 shots in 9 seconds or so).

thanks blackmagic for sweet software. still can't believe this is free software, that's mind blowing almost. only issues I encountered thus far was crashing when working (clicking) too fast and buggy animations (a few times I had x and y keyframes matching each other when I didn't do that; I think that has something to do with the cache since was tweaking on animations, rendering, watching, tweaking rendering watching etc.; on the few clips it happened I just ended up deleting it and re-doing the simple keyframe animations [I don't mind now but was annoying when it was happening]).

again, create software, looking forward to screen replacement and and other intermediate vfx. also, export times are pretty quick it seems. meaning faster than media encoder.

First guess, you have Input Scaling set incorrectly for your needs here.

But to my thinking the easier method would be to add all three clips to the same Master timeline and just Crop and Position them as needed.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

In my case, I'm attempting to split-screen 3 sequences of shots, not merely 3 individual shots. So adjusting the scale, position, and crop parameters for each individual clip would be incredibly imprecise and take an extremely long time.

When I attempt this, I am getting a different aspect ratio for each of the 3 nested timelines. All 3 of the nested timelines have exactly the same timeline settings and scale/retime settings within the inspector window.

Going through the color page is an interesting hack, but what is the official workflow for this nesting process with timelines of various resolutions?
