Gridlines or Rulers?

PostMon Jun 03, 2019 9:22 pm

What tools are available to help in cropping and zooming precisely?

Is there a way to change the color of the screen background (grey) and the canvas (black)? It's hard to see the edges of the frame.

While you can create youre own guides I would much like to have guides and rulers in Davnci with snapping to grid as an option.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

+1 for this too
Tiresome to add compound clip with Grids effect that needs to be adjusted when I do clip adjustments for horizon line when a pull down ruler would be ideal. Hopefully one day the good people at BM will add this tool

There is a ResolveFX grid you can superimpose as an OFX plug-in effect. I have a Grid preset in my PowerGrades that is set to very specific positions for the kinds of things I do most often, and it's very helpful when we're looking at relative title position or something like. The SMPTE Safe Action grid is also helpful to a point, though I wish it was continuously variable and could allow adjusting video level.

Anyone got a workaround for measuring exact pixels? Normally have to do this in adobe and would like to not have to move my entire project over for this one simple idea. I need the bottom line of my first exposed pixels on the image to be exactly 10pixels from the bottom of the frame ( i need to line up multiple clips exactly). was thinking about making an image in photoshop to handle this but would love to hear if there's an easier way.

Why doesn't DR have grids. I don't think is a tough task to implement them.

Have we mentioned that Blackmagic gives away a Grid OFX plug-in for free in the Studio version of Resolve?

Inspector units are in pixels so you could use a color generator on a new layer and use crops to set the position required as a reference. Opacity to adjust visibility.

Thanks Peter! This is a great idea and I didn't know I could do this within the inspector.

Hey this is fantastic // though it would be great to be able to toggle it on and off in the Edit tab and not have to apply it to every single clip. Doing some precise centre of frame edits and this extra step is very time consuming :)

I wonder if this is something they could add to the Safe Action Generator: provide the ability to leave that up all the time, have it come up on the Edit page and the Color page and the main output, and have it fully adjustable and customizable (in pixels or inches or whatever). We've been asking for something like this for a long time.

I use this all the time for titles, and while I can use the OFX Grid, it's an extra step.

Yep... considering that the old quantel Pablo had this in 2006/2007... it’s a bit overdue.....

This doesn't solves the request.

Sometimes I want to do a quick measure, in pixels or percentage unit, but I have no time to go searching and installing-configuring-deinstalling plugins,

instead, one expects to set on the viewer's 3-dots menu: "rulers > Percent, Pixels, Off", and assign a keyboard shortcut option. Just like any photo editor.

You can save it as a PowerGrade with the presets already enabled (which is what I do), or save it as a Favorite in the OFX processes on the Edit page. So what you're asking for has been there for some time now.

What we used to have in broadcast post was an external reticle generator with Safe Action and Safe Title, and sometimes a configurable box that could be moved around so we could make sure that (say) the manufacturer's logo was in the right place on every variation commercial. But it was not savable and we couldn't measure it in pixels -- we had to eyeball it and make reasonable assumptions that it was in the right place. If anything, the ResolveFX Grid is much, much more accurate.
