Editing Page- Show source audio tracks in timeline

PostMon Nov 25, 2019 6:53 pm

I'd like to see the source audio tracks on a clip I'm about to edit into my timeline similar to the way Premiere Pro or Avid does. Currently when I put a clip in the source viewer I have no idea how many audio channels it has and if I try to do an insert or overwrite edit it very likely will add extra tracks to my timeline when I don't want it to.

You can do this now. Change the view to Audio Track.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi Jim, not sure this solves the issue I'm describing. I'm editing b-roll, in this case I don't even care about the camera audio tracks, but there is no way to deselect them before making an edit to the timeline which often will add unwanted tracks when all I want is the video. I can go in to my source clip attributes and delete all the audio tracks, but this isn't a very good solution compared to just being able to see the source tracks in the timeline as I'm editing. Plus, if I did want to edit the source clip audio track 8 to track 1 in my timeline, how would I do that? There doesn't seem to be a way to have control over the patching of tracks like you've been able to do in Avid or Premiere forever.

In your case do a video only edit. No need to patch audio tracks.
My main issue is that I don't want an edit to the timeline adding extra audio tracks when the source clip number of tracks is greater than the number of audio tracks in the timeline. I want to disable certain source clip audio tracks on an edit by edit basis.

Hi Peter, I assume you mean by dragging the video only icon to the timeline? Or is there another way to do it using the keyboard? I’m really try to use keyboard shortcuts as much as possible, have been doing this awhile and that’s my preferred way to edit. And my issue is the same as yours. I end up with extra audio tracks when I’m not even targeting audio on the timeline at all.

If no audio destination is selected (the red rectangle) at the time of edit, then no audio tracks at all should go in. You can toggle the destination on and off with keyboard shortcuts. alt+ctrl+track #, I believe.

You should probably get through some training.

Hi John, that is just it. Even if you have no audio tracks selected before the edit, if your source has more audio channels than you have audio tracks on your timeline, you will add extra audio tracks when you make the edit. If you're editing with a source that has 8 audio channels (like the Sony FS7 footage I'm editing right now) you'd have to have 8 audio tracks in your timeline and de-select them all to keep from adding any audio when you make an edit, even if you don't really need or want 8 tracks of audio on your timeline. Just a little messy.

Pretty sure after doing a bit of research that this is just the way it is right now in Resolve, my feature request would be for a way to keep this from happening.

I was afraid of that.... The system does create tracks in other circumstances, whether they're wanted or not. For now, the only alternative may be dragging the video icon in the source viewer.

EDIT: as I recall, there's also a modified drag, maybe ctrl-drag.

Is this still an unsolved problem?

Well it still works the 'Resolve' way...

Track patching is done in one column. The position of each red rectangle vertically indicates the record track destination and the number inside the red rectangle indicates the source track that will be cut in. So you *can* route source clip tracks to record tracks at will.

You can 'move audio track destination' up and down - but only all together - I think you have to mouse to do individual patching (i.e. there is no 'autopatch' like Avid).

You can't patch the individual tracks of a source side timeline as far as I can make out - they go in ascending order - you can move the destination target up and down en bloc.

There's no indication of current source track patching UNLESS you select the source monitor with the mouse (i.e. the red rectangles always show the patching the 'last' time the source monitor was selected with the mouse).

e.g. if your last source loaded had 1 audio track, you shuttle down the timeline to a place where theres a 8 track source cut in and match frame - you'll still only see A1 with the red rectangle. Try using Q to toggle between source/record - no change. Try using Control 3,4,5 to toggle source/record/timeline - no change. Click in the source monitor - you'll now see the 8 audio tracks with red rectangles.

There's also no indication (that I can see) when you've edited stereo tracks into mono etc - or what the source track numbers are (without going into clip attributes).

Hey amici,
A friend showed me an interessant thing about tracks audio end pre listening:
if you go to INPECTOR in the FILE section you scoll down you find AUDIO CONFIGUARTION. If you pass with mouse you can listen just the track you are over and if yo uncheck the track this audio will not be on the timeline.
Hope this help

Right-click on your clip icon in the bin.

Select Clip Attributes.

Click on "Audio" at the top, to the right of "Video".

For each audio track you don't want, click on it and hit the Trash icon which appears at the far right.

That does not solve the issue of editing from a clip with multiple radio mics, where each mic is required but only one or two may be needed for a particular edit. Clip attributes won't work for this. The real issue is that not all audio tracks are visible in the Source viewer during editing. Having to open the Inspector to simply preview a source track is not efficient when editing lots of dialog from multiple audio tracks on one clip.

I believe the real issue lies with the audio mixer. On the one hand, it's only tied to the timeline and not relevant for the source viewer. On the other hand, it's a pure track mixer, not a clip mixer. I've always found that unfortunate, but I’ve learned to live with it because DaVinci Resolve offers many other advantages.

When reviewing many clips and preparing them for the timeline, I’ve long used the approach of placing all the clips from a bin into a new sequence first. There, I can quickly select the audio clips on tracks 3 and 4 (by holding down the Alt key) and lower them together by a meaningful amount. Then I load that sequence into the source viewer and cut from it into my actual rough cut sequence. In the source viewer, you can easily jump from clip to clip using the up/down arrow keys.

The new "Source Tape"-style feature, which achieves something similar, is actually much faster to access — but I have no control over the clips or their levels.

A change to the mixer that would automatically switch between source and timeline, and could also act as a clip mixer, would be vastly better.

Within the Edit module, I don’t need a track mixer — that’s what Fairlight is for, with all its capabilities. But to make meaningful use of the mixer within Edit, a clip mixer would be extremely useful. For example, to make quick level adjustments (without automation) during playback, on any channel. That’s not really feasible with the Inspector, especially if a clip has four or more audio tracks.
