BMPCC4K Grainy video vs GH5??

PostWed Dec 04, 2019 8:00 am

I shot my first intervew with the my new PC4K along with my GH5 as the second camera on the second shooter.
Very excited until I looked at the footage......
The BM was @ 800 iso, and the video came out super grainy?
everything looked great in the viewfinder but the actual footage seemed underexposed making it gainy??
1 led, 1 white fill card, 1 backlight led. pretty standard stuff.
The GH5 was way footage better.
I could not believe it, I had to hammer the BM footage hard with NEAT just to use it, then I even had to
color it to b&w on top of that for the playing video.
This is the second time shooting with it and both times have been gut-wrenching disappointing in image quality.
Even the color was really bad compared to the GH5, I was able to color match the cloths and skin tone of the person in a minute with Davinci, the BM was a headache and on top of it I could not get the shirt to color match and keep the skin tones. Easy with the GH5 footage.
Both shot log.
BM had a speedbooster ulta .71
sigma 18/35
all the standard stuff.......
Both had similar ISO fstops and shutter.
What am I doing wrong here?
I really want this to work out, I want to love the BM but I am obviously doing something wrong....
I am going to do some more tests but I am halfway to selling it and going with a second gh5. I cant believe I am even thinking that I was just about to go get a second bm and replace the gh5 but now I just dont know.

I’m feeling your pain. I tried to match 6K and Canon 1dx ii but there were always annoying differences. The different brands have different colour science. I made a business decision not to spend the hours required to learn to grade to the degree required and just purchase some 4K’s to replace the 1dx ii.

In relation to the 800ISO you may want to stick to the native ISO. Did you use BRAW or ProRes?

Rick Lang, one of the kings on this board, reckons he lives on 400 ISO & I think he uses BRAW not ProRes. I followed his lead at 400ISO BRAW and made sure my Iris, shutter and lighting exposed correctly using False colour. I have not had any noise issues.

Hi Stan, please post original BRAW or ProRes sample footage (NOT screenshots) - otherwise no one here can help you because no one can see and examine what you are talking about.

When you say you were shooting with a Speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35 - this sounds to me like you had a very low light level on set if you couldn't manage to get a decent picture.

Also don't expect plastic clean noise free images from a camera without internal noise reduction.

Anyway - if you want any useful help here, supply us with the footage so we can SEE what we are talking about. Also details about your light setup and if possible a picture from set.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Don't shoot the Pocket an 800 iso, it will be super noisy. Bump it up to 1250 where the second gain kicks in or drop it down to 400, which should be nice and clean (except maybe for some easy to take care of shadow noise).

Shoot the native ISO - 400.

But I think I know your real problem: You shot with a Windowed sensor.

This really reads like a GH5 bait post. Get a light meter and learn to do proper exposure.

I sold Lumix Gh5 at July , but for one year I used both and I aligned perfectly both without problems, Rec log, rec709, raw. In aces no big problem, in davinci yrgb you can use CTS color transform space ofx to move from original to rec709 without problem.
Lumix Gh5 had some small different on magenta but very small, I see on color chart. Check if your pocket is correctly exposed (never 800 iso low light, 1250 the second gain is correct choise)
See that

Wb in camera, ever, also with raw. Start with right thing. When you do later you do from sensor info chooses from you, when you do in camera you use correct grey surface to do wb correctly balanced.

Classic.

This is not a GH5. It's a cinema camera. It also doesn't have in-camera noise reduction. I came from a GH5 to the Pocket 4k. Pocket 4k is WAY better. No debate. Try again with light.

I have had one instance where my p4k footage looked grainy and technically less good (rough edges) than my gx80. My conclusion is the theatre hall I shot in had sub par led lighting.

When using my own lighting the p4k blows away the gx80.
I have used gh5 and gx80 alongside, at that time I found the gx80 on the same level.

cineair, go in your camera settings and confirm you didn't shoot 1080 Windowed.
