Hi all,
Davinci Resolve keeps crashing every single time I try to render my project and I have no idea why.

I have a:
- Windows 10
- i7 CPU 3.00GHz
- NVIDIA GeForce 1660 Ti graphics card
- 1GB HDD storage (I keep my video files for the project on this internal HDD unit while my operating system and DaVinci resolve are installed on a 250GB SSD internal drive)
- 16GB RAM

as far as my video files go, the whole project is about 6 hours long and every video clip is in VLC. I have tried to render my project both in Quicktime and MP4 at 1080p 30fps. My project is also 1080p 30fps. The encoder is the h264 one. Also, the crash keeps happening in the first 10-15 minutes of the rendering process but sometimes at 32% and 50%+
Please help, I have no idea why this keeps happening to me. I got this PC in November 2019 and updated my graphics card driver recently directly from the NVIDIA website.

Oh, and I use Davinci Resolve 16.
I'm gonna try to see if moving my video files to the SSD will help
EDIT: Did not work

EDIT 2: I tried to set my output file in my SSD drive (which is where Davinci 16 is installed as well as the operating system) and I got up to 50%+ render before it crashed.
EDIT 3: I tried to install the studio version of my NVIDIA graphics card driver but Resolve still crashes (crashed at 80something%).
EDIT 4: Used the 431.86 studio driver and it worked 1 out of the 3 times I tried to render.

I think the same thing may be happening to me... Keep crashing while rendering. Here is my Crash Dump with some extra errors above it included.

On the Deliver page, in the File area, set the Maximum Render Speed to 10, and see if that helps.

Also, I'd advise you use the NVIDIA 431.86 Studio driver, and not the latest one.

If neither of those help, provide the following:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here. If you are a new user, and the system won't let you post a link, put a space somewhere near the beginning, so the system doesn't see it as a link.

Are you trying to render files to the same drive as the source drive? I find it's not a good idea to render to your boot drive or to your source drive; I use a third drive which I call the "Render Drive" so it doesn't add another drag on the system.

Worst case workaround: chop the session up in smaller pieces, each say an hour apart, and render to a relatively-benign format like DNxHD 444. Get all the pieces rendered, then bring them back into Resolve and then render a final "complete" 6-hour version with all the parts cut together. If Resolve struggles with creating your H.264 files, then I would just render another DNxHD file and use a 3rd-party program to do the H.264 encoding. It's also possible to render out a lower-quality DNxHD 175 file (or something like that), and then take that 6-hour file and upload it to Vimeo or YouTube and let the website do the compression for you. It's generally known that all these websites re-compress everything uploaded anyway, so that might save you the extra work. Be aware that it takes a long, long time for them to do this compression, particularly with a long file.

BTW, as a general rule, I think it's tough to use highly-compressed formats in post and also compress them again going out to another compressed format. You're kind of stomping on them twice. I get that if this is what you have to deal with, that's the way it is. Dealing with this in post is a challenge in terms of workflow.

I've had similar problems with rendering since moving to DR16. I've tried nearly all the suggestions currently in the various threads and so far only one thing worked:

Davinci Resolve > preferences > memory and GPU > GPU Processing mode = OpenCL

I currently have the latest Studio driver but I see a post her to use on older version. I will try that next.

It happens constantly to me too.
I'm rendering some super simple 640x480 videos. randomly from 15% to 99% DaVinci crashes. I have the latest nvidia studio driver 441.66 with a GeForce GTX1050, i5-7300 HQ, 12 GB RAM. It happened before, but not so much as it happens with 16.1.2 Davinci.

PS - i'm testing capping render speed (to 75), just to see if it helps. Seems so, but I have to do more test.

I capped my render speed at 50, and my video finally finished rendering. Must have been putting too much pressure on the Processor. MY Processor was at almost 90%, for the 75 and 100 speed render. But when i brought the render speed down to 50 my Processor stayed at around 60-70% throughout the render. Thanks for the insights guys.

@nereo: Don't use the latest NVIDIA driver. Try the driver I suggested: 431.86 Studio.

Hola, I can confirm that (in my case) just capping the rendering to 100 solved the problem. Didn't try the driver regression btw (I already had an older driver and updated to the new one to see if that was the problem). It's a bit of let down since my machine could perform really faster than rendering 100 fps for that resolution, but who cares, it renders!

I'm pleased to say, rolling back to this version of the NVIDIA driver solved all my rendering problems.

Thanks Dwaine for the suggestion. Hopefully it will get fixed at some point.

I ran into display issues with 16.2 where playback and exporting the grade applied flickered on and off randomly.

I upgraded to the latest studio Drivers 442.19 but still had this new problem.

I had to go back to the previous 16.1 build (still keeping studio driver 442.19) and everything is fine.

I'm in the middle of a project so reluctant to go back to 16.2 to try and find out the problem, but I will once that project is complete.

Hi, everybody! Thank you so much for the suggestions. Sorry that I haven't been replying but I gave up for a while and did not come back to check on the forum.

I ended up using the suggested 431.86 studio driver version and it didn't work for the first 2 times but on the third try, I finally managed to render the 6ish hours of gameplay footage I had. I am not completely satisfied with the results since DaVinci crashed the first 2 times but it finally worked.

So this method doesn't work perfectly but, if I get to try another method that works better, I will keep this post updated. Also, I will post the log after I get another crash. Thank you all again!

This is the first time you mention that it's gameplay footage.
If that is a software recording (like OBS), you can have a lot of problems in Resolve and most other professional NLEs. Check if it has variable frame rates with Media Info or similar software. If so: convert it to a constant frame rate!

I usually don't like to raise post from the dead, but just about every time I have an issue this post is the one that Google brings me to so I thought it could be helpful for someone else as well.

Resolve 17 was crashing out of the blue when I started to render (non game play video). I had read this post and verified my drivers were the latest (we are well past the suggested driver version now) but I had totally missed the "Studio Driver" version and had been using the "Game Ready" driver. Now I don't know if it was coincidence or not, but after making the simple switch in the Nvidia GeForce Experience I was able to render without an issue. It was 20 minutes of rendering, where previously it was stopping a couple of seconds after clicking the render button. So I appreciate everyone who took time to post suggestions here. Years later still helpful!

Would be helpful to have a Windows System Information .NFO file and a project export .drp of the project this is happening with.

Also, for some reason, there are no crash logs in the log current log file you sent. Seems odd. Some of the normal logs are missing as well.
