Time limit: free version

PostTue Jan 14, 2020 11:42 am

Good Morning. Yesterday I downloaded free Davinci Resolve 16 to edit a short film. When I had already assembled and edited the entire first half (and after seeing a 3-hour tutorial to find out how to use it), I received a notification stating that I had exceeded my free version time limit. I was informing myself on the Blackmagic website and I was looking for even more information on the Internet to know its limitations, and nowhere have I read that it had a time limit. Also, how long is the limit? Because I haven't been using it for more than 24 hours, and a good video cannot be edited at that time. Now, in addition, I have the short film half done after so much effort invested. When a certain time limit passes, does that limit restart again and can it still be used? What good is the free version if I can't use it more than one day? Thanks, I await your response.

PD: My apologies for my English, since this is not very good because I am Spanish.

There is no time limit for Resolve. My guess is that you've either downloaded a pirate version, or you've installed some third party plug-ins that do have a time limit.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The best place for downloading Resolve is the Blackmagic website. This is a source you can trust.

Indeed. And because some people seem to have trouble finding the Resolve downloads on our web site, they are here:

It's true, I downloaded Davinci Resolve on another page. I will uninstall it and reinstall it from this page. Thank you very much to everyone for your help.

I have reinstalled it from the Black Magic page and it keeps coming out that I have reached the limit of use of Davinci Resolve ... I don't know what I should do anymore.

Show us.

(I wonder if you're trying to use a Studio feature in the Free version.)

Yep, I'm also guessing that OP has used some Resolve Studio (paid version) features, which results in a watermark saying something like: ”You have reached the limit of Resolve [free].” No mention of a time limit, though.

A screenshot would be helpful of course.

I just received the same notice. As far as I know, I've been using the regular download version for over a week now. I've attached a screenshot. I was trying to apply ResolveFX Color: Color Stabilizer. Thanks! Ken

That indicates you are trying to use a feature in the free version that is only available in the paid Studio version.
It's the terminology that can confuse. The free version is just called DaVinci Resolve , the paid version is called DaVinci Resolve Studio.
If you already have a Dongle or activation code and see this, it means you have installed the wrong version.

Thanks for the clarification. Is there any way, besides trial and error, to tell what belongs to "free" vs Studio? I do get that this wonderful piece of software is free and I shouldn't complain, but there must be another way to accomplish the same goal... May be a good marketing ploy, but it is a little "Customer"/user-unfriendly. Ken

Maybe it should just say: "You don't got that."

I don't see that the message contains anything related to a time(!) limit. It's the message that tells that the feature is not available in the free version of Resolve. It's reasonably clear IMHO.

Thanks all!

I found this on page 167 of THE BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO DAVINCI RESOLVE 16: "The Tilt-Shift Blur filter is added; but if you are using the free version of DaVinci Resolve, a dialog box indicates that this effect is available only in the Studio version." It shows the limitation notice in my screengrab.

Mario, I am a new user who got this message unexpectedly. I was unaware that the free version contained stuff that worked in Studio only. The time limit was just a thought I used to search the forum for an explanation, which did provide me the thread I posted in. Seems like a reasonable course, IMHO.

As I do understand that they want to sell the full version - I would like the ability to disable all those FX and tools only the Studio version offers, so that beginners like me don't get confused with these messages in the beginning.

Also if those FX and tools were disabled, they wont clutter up the editor window!
I mean they use up space and make navigating mre difficult just because they are there - but being a bginner I wont use them directly and thus I would be HAPPY with a less cluttered desktop.

If I need those tools later as I advance I then can still buy them and get them displayed - but when they are useless in the free version they shouldnt be displayed and use up space!

If they remove them from the free version people will complain that they can't test those effects before buying.

What I've done is add the ones that are Studio only to Favorites. A star will show at all these in the list so I know I can't use them.
