Handbrake settings to match Resolve export?

PostSat Apr 04, 2020 2:22 pm

Hi folks,
Looking for some quick tips here - I exported an mov file and MediaInfo shows me this:

Code: Select all
Format                                   : MPEG-4
Format profile                           : QuickTime
Codec ID                                 : qt   0000.02 (qt  )
File size                                : 3.59 GiB
Duration                                 : 14 min 48 s
Overall bit rate                         : 34.7 Mb/s
Writing application                      : Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio
Video
ID                                       : 1
Format                                   : AVC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                           : Main@L4
Format settings                          : 2 Ref Frames
Format settings, CABAC                   : No
Format settings, Reference frames        : 2 frames
Format settings, GOP                     : M=3, N=13
Codec ID                                 : avc1
Codec ID/Info                            : Advanced Video Coding

When I converted the same to mp4 using Handbrake I get a very low bitrate stream:
Code: Select all
Format                                   : MPEG-4
Format profile                           : Base Media / Version 2
Codec ID                                 : mp42 (isom/iso2/avc1/mp41)
File size                                : 926 MiB
Duration                                 : 14 min 48 s
Overall bit rate                         : 8 745 kb/s
Writing application                      : HandBrake 1.2.2 2019022300
Video
ID                                       : 1
Format                                : AVC
Format/Info                          : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                       : High@L4.1
Format settings                    : CABAC / 4 Ref Frames
Format settings, CABAC         : Yes
Format settings, Reference frames        : 4 frames
Codec ID                                 : avc1
Codec ID/Info                            : Advanced Video Coding

Common Internet literature suggests MP4 is more compressible that MOV, however the comparatively very low bitrate (34bmps vs 8mbps) seems to suggest there might be a quality loss as well... while not trying to match bitrates exactly - What settings should I use in HB to get equivalent quality in MP4?

Thanks

Hi

Why do you want to export a hard compress file from Davinci Resolve and then hard compress the file again in Handbrake? Why not export a high quality uncompressed Intermediate file and then use Handbrake ?

Best,
Ole

Hi Ole
My really old android 4 tablet does not accept a file transfer of .MOV type which is why is why I did it this way rather than reopen Resolve and do a time consuming export again with the FX applied. But its got a good screen so I use it to quickly check the results of my color grading.

Of course for my final project I will take care to export directly from Resolve and also save an intermediate format for backup. I'm just curious - if somebody has some quick answers off the top of their heads, then its a good starting point for me to dig deeper and expand my knowledge, else no worries - this is not a troubleshooting request that was intended to bother other folks.

Cheers

Okay, so you don't need Handbrake - just make a new project in Davinci Resolve - put your movie on the timeline - export will take no time ! Or use Transcode inside Davinci Resolve - se my short video about Transcode !
