Interesting that the 20mm f/2.8 AIS is not comparable. Does anyone know if the rear element sticks out to much or what the reason is??

hiya guy just have a question about this, just looking on their site, it says,

"Tips: Before mounting your lens to the adapter, please make sure that the f-stop of the adapter's aperture ring is turned to "8" (i.e. mounting your lens to the adapter while the adapter's aperture ring is full open)."

I thought Nikon G lenses didn't have an aperture ring on them. Or does this speed booster work with and Nikon Lenses such as F and D mount?

It works with all Nikon lenses including the G type. It have aperture control in the adaptor for G type lenses. That is what they are referring to.

After the whole Vizelex Light Cannon debacle, I promised myself to wait for a review first for any of these speed booster things.

Then I go ahead and order the Metabones MFT to Nikon Speed Booster without hesitation. :|

I'm beyond thrilled this version has finally been released. I just shot them a note asking if smooth aperture control could possibly be an option, or if I could control the lens aperture with my de-clicked lenses instead of their adapter.

The built in aperture control is for G type lenses that have no aperture ring.

If your lenses are manual and have been de-clicked then you don't need to use the built in control on the adaptor.

YAY, I just bought one. I have not received the one from Photodiox yet but Im pretty sure that ones going back. The only thing that interests me is the 0.5X version they are promising but Im so glad this came out in time for the pocket cam.

Well their web page says:

Yes, I included that quote in my email/query to Metabones, and they assured me that the adapter was in fact de-clicked. I guess we will have to see when early units get delivered.

Short article from Dan Chung, mentioning that lens pairing will need to be tested (based on his experience with EOS-to-NEX version): http://www.newsshooter.com/2013/07/04/n ... -micro-43/.

Only mentioned vignetting on certain lenses but hopefully BMCC's smaller sensor size makes this less of an issue (crossed fingers).

Just got mine. Haven't had time to do any formal tests yet, but some initial observations:

Build quality is very good - all metal. Mine's maybe a tiny bit tighter than other MFT adapters on the BMCC but it's not worrisome.

Aperture ring is NOT de-clicked. It clicks at each of the 16 "Stops." Honestly, I kind of prefer this in some ways. Makes it a little easier to count off half stops in your head. I've not had time to see if those "stops" line up with the correct apertures or not. Will try to test this soon.

The Tokina 11-16 works fine and does not vignette at 11mm!

As expected, this brings the field of view of the 2.3 crop BMCC back in line with the Canon 1.6 Crop APS-C field of view. I tested my 50mm on both my 7D and the BMCC with speedbooster and the field of view was identical as far as I could tell.

Will be posting more tests soon.

How are the corners on the 11-16/2.8 between 2.8~5.6?

Are they really soft?

From http://www.metabones.com/speed-booster-questions:
When will m4/3 cameras be supported?

Speed Booster™ for m4/3 cameras is currently available for Nikon G, Leica R and Contax C/Y lenses. Support for Contarex, ALPA and Rollei QBM lenses will follow in the second half of 2013.

Canon EF lens (but not EF-S) support is planned in the future, but we do not have an estimated date yet.

The m4/3 version also reduces focal length by a 0.71x factor. So, the combined focal length multiplier of a m4/3 camera and Speed Booster is 1.4x. (2x from camera x 0.71x from Speed Booster.) The optics are optimized for the smaller sensor size.

Pretty useless, Canon regulates the Aperture electronically, not mechanically like Nikon. So there's no way to make it like this.
Would love to see a manual version though, don't own an electric Lens for EF.

Sorry, yes, long day and I wasn't thinking.

Now the question remain as to why the 20mm f2.8 AI-S will not work with this adapter, if this is a coverage issue with M4/3 (which may not exist on the the BMPCC or BMCC) or if it is due to a physical issue.

If the Tokina 11-16mm works then I'm not sure how it could be a physical clearance issue...
I know that the 20mm Nikon lens does have a protruding piece of metal (to save the rear element if rested rear downwards), but I would say it was less than the extrusion of an APS-C rear barrel.

Then again if the 11-16mm still covers the image circle on M4/3 so I doubt the 20mm's image circle is the problem, especially as it was designed for a much larger sensor/film gauge.

Anyone?

Pretty sure it's the rear element. The G lenses only go on one way, and you have to be careful to line up the markers spot on. F lenses, of course, can go on any way. Due to the nature of the lens elements there's a lot less depth in the Speedbooster than in a normal MFT -> Nikon adapter.

I'd be interested to hear about other G lenses.

Obviously the resting stand does stick out a bit more. But I suppose a little bit of dremmeling could soon fix that ;)

Just wondering if we could ask you to do another test.
I've seen alot of tests where people have shown a before and after, without correcting the exposure.

I'm curious to see what distortion is going on, if possible could you please do another test where you leave the aperture but control the adjusted exposure with 1 stop of ND or drop down the ISO a whole stop so we can do a side by side comparison of the new distortion introduced?

Sorry to be a pain, but would really like to actually see what I can expect to get.

The Tokina 10-17 (at the widest end) looks pretty aweful. Colour fringing like crazy at the edges, but more acceptable at the long end. Probably less of an issue for those after the adapter for the BMPCC.

Nice garden by the way ;)

Nikon lets the body adjust the aperture mechanically, it's possible to regulate it with a lever. No problem.

The Tokina is not for FUllframe, that's for sure. But the Blackmagic Cinema Camera also doesn't become a Fullframe camera with this Speedbooster, it gets a crop of around 1.6x, which is around the same then what the Tokina was designed for. Perfect match :)

So basically, there might be no need for me to buy the Cine version coming out soon....

So the aperture control on the Booster will let me control aperture on the Tokina? THings just got interesting.

The Cine Version is FAR to expensive if you ask me, also because it seems that it's just a modded normal casing.
The Booster is not de-clicked as far as I understood, so no smooth adjusting. However, Aperture-control is totally possible, so you coul just order both and start shooting :)

Man this development isn't good for my wallet.

I have the 35/2 AI and the 50/1.8 AI, and now I may be stocking back on old Nikkor glass.

I knew that the Nikon version of the tokina 11-16 had the aperture lever in the back, but I didn't know the Metabones NIkon booster could actuate it and change the aperture.

Sighhhhhhhh

So I got both the Metabones speedbooster and the fotodiox light canon today in the mail. I dont have an MFT here yet should come by the end of the month but I can say jut from the weight and feel of them the metabones is a much better build. I mean we knew this from the company and the pricing but they are very different. The metabones model is a bit smaller then the fotodiox and it feels at least 2X heavier due to the glace and the better build quality.

I have opted for the replacement from fotodiox but only because they say there is one that will have 0.5X compared to the 0.7X

Guessing it's that resting stand on the 20mm. The mechanics on the Tokina 11-16 and my Nikon AIS 50mm 1.2 don't stick out nearly that far, but I had already removed the resting stand from my 50mm due to concerns with the 5D Mark II back in the day. I can't think of any other reason it wouldn't work.

I thought these lenses were out of the question with Metabones stating that Speed Booster does not support for EF-S lenses, but your comment has me hopeful.

I might just be getting greedy now, but is anyone able to report on pairing results with these lenses?

There have been several questions about the Nikkor 20/2.8 AIS here, so I thought I would try to help out.

When designing the SB we measured several dozen different Nikkors, including 15/3.5 AI, 16/3.5 AI'd, 20/2.8 AFD, 24/2.8 AIS, and many others. We mistakenly assumed that we had done an exhaustive survey.

But the 20/2.8 AIS - which is not one of the lenses we checked - turned out to have an unusualy long rear protrusion, and it interferes mechanically with the SB.

The good news is that you can make a simple and completely reversible fix to this lens by simply removing the three small screws that fix the interfering shroud from the rear of the lens. Just make sure you use a high-quality tight-fitting screwdriver:

I might just be getting greedy now, but is anyone able to report on pairing results with these lenses?

The problem with EF-S lenses is that Canon decided to allow a shorter working distance with this mount. In some EF-S lenses there is no actual glass sticking further behind the flange - just a plastic shroud. Some people have had success in removing this shroud and using some of the EF-S lenses with the SpeedBooster.

Note that Nikon DX lenses don't have this problem, even though they have a similar image circle diameter. Nikon kept the same basic working distance restriction for DX lenses that they use for FX lenses. Third party DX format lenses that come in both Nikon and Canon mounts should mount without any problem because their working distance is set by the demands of the Nikon DX mount and not Canon EF-S. I know for a fact that the Sigma 8-16mm works because I've tried it. The onliy problem with the 8-16 is the lens hood, which causes vignetting along the long sides of a m4/3 frame because the hood is shaped for a 2:3 aspect ratio sensor rather than 4:3.

The Tokina 11-16 works fine and does not vignette at 11mm!

EF-S lenses are not supported on the EF to NEX SpeedBooster as the NEX sensor is ASP-C and the image circle is then to small.

On the BMCC/BMPCC the sensor is much smaller and the image circle from an ASP-C lens via the SpeedBooster still covers the sensor.

Edit: And as brianc1959 pointed out Canon EF-S lenses physically won't mount. Same applies to Canon EF-S lenses on a 5D.

Almost forgot which forum I was in!

My earlier tests with a prototype SpeedBooster and the Sigma 8-16mm was with a conventional micro four thirds camera. The hood should not cause any vignetting problems with BMCC 2.5k because the sensor is smaller.
