Render part of a timeline (selection)

PostMon Jun 19, 2017 10:28 pm

Can you render a selection (part of a timeline) without rendering the entire clip? I have an animated map ninth video and I want to make sure it stays on the screen.

I may have to put a matte behind the map which I'm not sure how to do.

Thanks

As of b3, selective caching wasn't working (when set to "user"). Didn't try it in b4, but this feature has been broken a long time -- since the early 12 betas, I think.

Both 'smart' and 'user' cache material which may not need it (for example, one track of video and titles), but also fail to cache on command. Hope they sort this out.

EDIT: On second thought, it probably would work, though at the cost of caching material you didn't need (or want) to cache, whether set to "Smart" or "User".

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do, whether you mean rendering out to a standalone file or just using the cache. If it's the latter, it's the entire clip.

If you need to composite something behind an object, you can use an alpha output and duplicate the layers, then cut the image out with a powercurve window. Or you could cut it out with any compositing program like Fusion or After Effects or whatever.

I have the same issue. I do a weekly TV show with 5 different segments. All segments need the same coloring and such. But when I render I would like to render each section as a separate file even though they are all in the same time line. Wait... I think I just answered my question... would creating different tine lines do this for me?

You can create an IN and Out point on your Timeline and from the Deliver page just choose to render between the In and Out points. You can also create multiple Timelines in a project and render each one separately.

I assume ppl here is referring to a very handy feature in Premiere Pro: "render In to Out"; it will put in cache a rendered version of the said selection. It is useful when you want to preview a small edit your machine isn't capable of showing in real time and you don't want to wait for the program to render the entire timeline or make an export.
(possibile applications? i.e. Smooth Cut on a notebook)

I'm new to the great Resolve, but I feel like I'm missing something: is it possible that this feature is actually included in resolve, but we didn't find it, or, on the other hand: what are we getting wrong? how is it that we need this function even if Blackmagic decided not to script it?

1) you can output cache for that
2) there is a new feature in v17 that allow you to render something and swap the content in the timeline

The new "Render in Place" feature in Resolve provides a similar function. This is all covered in the New Feature Guide.

If you have cache, in the delivery page there is an Putin to render the final output from the cache itself instead of recalculate everything.
