Idea for Design of Next BMCC

Seriously BM, Mr. Grant, consider this as an inspiration for the next design of next year's BMCC. The idea is a central cube made of two dockable sections. Like two Apple TVs stack together. Those two are:

Module 1. Sensor / Processor module
Module 2. LCD/SSD module - similar to the atomos Samurai, this will contain all the controls, a touch screen IPS LCD, and at the slot for the SSD. This second module has a custom snap on dock at the Module 1, essentially making it a perfect cube, cause I know you love apple design philisophy. BUt, as users, you can detach it and use it as monitor you can place anywhere, like on top, on the side, on the bottom, on a loupe, it can even be a new BM separate product you can sell as monitor/recorder for other cameras. It will connect thru 6G SDI when detached.

Module 3: Battery/ Grip - which basically will carry a basic record button and two Sony large batteries, similar on their alpha series lines. You can attach it thru screw points all over Module 1, . I f your left handed, attache it on the left...if right handed on the right, or on top, or away on a rail..whatever you want.

So basically its a 3-part module, which you can attach together for a ready to shoot configuration for run n gun / documentary shoters or you can dettach off and connect thru wires on a rig...for those narrrative shooters. So basically a camera for everyone. AND IT WILL LOOK STILL DAMN GOOD!








By that time, Moore's law must have already worked on your favor so a processor at twice the power that you use now at the same price already exists..so maybe you can already give us this two , ONLY two more remaining request.

1. 60p (or at leat 48p in Prores)
2. Native ISO 1250 BUT can go as low as 200 WITHOUT loosing dynamic range ( I know this is possible becasue the recent dragon sensor claims its capable of this) so we wont have to deal with filters and IR pollution anymore.

You can keep the S35 4K sensor of the BM4K or anything better to keep it at 4K for 4K price point.

Sure, a modular approach is a good idea, but this adds to increased production costs. Part of the reason Blackmagic was able to keep the price point so affordable with the BMCC was the "single box" battery sealed inside approach. Every time a new box is designed to work exclusively with another box the costs go up. But now that they already have the affordable BMCC, developing something modular and more expensive might fill a void in the $8,000 to $12,000 range. Personally, I'd rather have two non-modular BMCC cameras for $6,000 than one modular camera for the same price.

The best part of being poor is you'd get to save up for years before you can afford the product so by that time version 3 or 4 would have been release adn its a much much more polished version of the first gen at pretty much the same price. And since BM lostens closely to its customers...we've got to contribute for our dream camera too!:)

BTW, the Oddysey 7 which can record 4K/2K/HD RAW or in Prores/dnxhd fir up to 240fos is such an amazing device for 1.5-2K$. That is exactly the idea for Module 2. Its great that a product like that already exists now which means the tech to do it are here. Now we only have to make Module 1, simply a box with a sensor and processor. The CMOSIS 4K sensor,coupled with a powerful processor to spit out 12bit 60p 4K RAW would be enough. Plug that into the Oddysey-like module 2 and we have our dream cam.

Odyssey 7 sounded good until the pricing was released, and they let everyone know that you had to use their proprietary 2.5" SSDs, based on server technology.

Sure, they say they've done this for reliability and speed, which is fair enough, but it adds considerable cost over something like an Atomos Samurai.

It sounds quite like your dream camera is an EPIC apart from price. It is in essence just a brain that you bolt on your own peripheries to.

I'd love to have a camera body like an Arca Swiss F 6X9 small view camera with full tilts and swings. If PhaseOne or Leaf can make their medium format digital backs capture full high quality video, move over IMAX!
