ATEM Mini Pro workflow

PostSun May 17, 2020 7:14 pm

Hi all, I ordered an ATEM Mini Pro a few days a go and with some luck it will arrive in a week or so. I have some questions on how to make it work the way I need it to. I hope someone has experience with this and can shine some light.

My current situation:

Four times a week, I record 1.5 hour yoga classes. At the same time, they’re streamed over Zoom.us. To do this, I use a BMPCC 4K, with a Samsung T5 to record the class, and through the HDMI output of the camera I use a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder to stream the class live over Zoom.us (with a custom 3D LUT applied in-cmaera), connected over Thunderbolt 2 to my 2014 MacBookPro 15".

I also have a second BMPCC 4K for B-shots, which I only use to record to SSD, it’s not connected to my computer. Like the first camera, I use it to record the whole class, in 4K DCI RAW. I use two mics, both connected to the first camera: Sennheiser XSW-D receiver connected over mini-jack, Sennheiser E602-II connected through XLR.

Once the live stream is over, I use the footage from both cameras to create a video for our eLearning platform. I also add a leader, lower thirds, music, adjust the audio, etc. Then I upload that file to Vimeo.

The current situation is quite time-consuming. After recording and streaming a 1.5 hour class, I spend another 4 hours on editing (not counting rendering and upload time).

Thinking it would be a huge time-saver to mix live, I ordered the ATEM Mini Pro. That way, I can do all the audio adjustments live, cue leaders and other graphics, insert music, and switch between cameras with cross dissolve. That could be recorded and I wouldn’t have to do any editing afterward. And the people who view the class live get the same product as those who view it later.

I’ve been reading the ATEM Mini manual, trying to figure out how I would set it up to work like I would like it to. It’s trickier than I thought it would be.

Here’s what I envisioned:

- 2 HDMI inputs used from BMPCC 4Ks for video. The same 2 HDMI inputs also carry the mic signal from 2 mics connected to the BMPCCC 4K.

– Leaders and lower thirds preloaded and initiated from the ATEM Mini Pro. Music cued in using the mini jack input on the back of the ATEM Mini Pro.

– Multiview from the ATEM Mini Pro to a television using HDMI.

– ATEM software control from my 16" MacBookPro laptop which has USB-C ports. To control audio levels, set graphics, etc.

– Mixed output from the ATEM Mini Pro to my 16" MacBookPro over USB-C, to have Zoom.us recognize the ATEM as a webcam.

– Mixed output recorded to a Samsung T5 SSD drive, either directly from the USB-C port on the ATEM, or first to the MBP and then recorded to a Samsung T5 SSD drive connected to it.

BUT then I saw that the ATEM Mini Pro only has 1 HDMI-out and 1 USB-C port.

I can connect my laptop to the USB-C port on the ATEM, so that it will be recognized as webcam. I can then also connect the HDMI-out to my Blackmagic Video Assist 7", from where I can view the mixed output and record to a connected Samsung T5 SSD drive. But then I’m out of ports, I won’t be able to use a TV to monitor the Multiview.

The ATEM Mini Pro also has an Ethernet port. I could use that to interface with the computer, running the ATEM control. Unfortunately, I can’t use it to stream to Zoom.us. I may have to use YouTube or Twitch instead, which do support Ethernet.

Am I missing anything? Can I stream over Zoom, record to SSD, use ATEM control panel, and use Multiview at the same time?

Right now, what I’ve come up with is:

- Multiview on television (HDMI-out)
– ATEM control on MacBookPro (Ethernet to MacBookPro)
– Stream to YouTube or Twitch (Ethernet to MacBookPro)
– Record to SSD (USB-C)

Ideally, I’d use Zoom.us over USB-C for streaming, but my USB-C port will already be taken. And as far I know, video over Ethernet is not possible over Zoom.us.

Any ideas?

I think you've maxed it out.

My question, why is there no LUT support on the mini??
I have a BMMCC and I don't think I can use it for livestreaming.

Re: ATEM Mini Pro MULTIVIEW ADJUST

I have a very specific use for the Mini Pro. Teleprompter switching Primary to Backup just in case.
The multiview function on this unit is useful in that I can see both laptops AND with the help of production see a live feed in one of the boxes.
HOWEVER I can not adjust the boxes. Beyond flipping PGM and PVW I cannot move the boxes like the full ATEMs.
Is there anyway that I can with this mini pro just have Primary, Backup, LIVEFEED and Program 4 boxes visible? That would be useful.

To the OP:

You should be able to record using the computer and OBS Studio instead of recording direct from the ATEM.

If you want all of what you are looking to do the way you wanted to do it, you would need one of the Extreme models (for the extra USB port and/or the extra HDMI out).

Mackenflow: LUT support is a camera feature, not an ATEM feature.

Why do you think that? I just did a livestream today with a BMPCC and 2 x Studio 4K Pro.
