Missing H265 Export

PostTue Mar 05, 2019 10:21 am

Hi,

I'm running the Studio Version of Resolve 15.2.3.

My source files are 10 bit (yuv420) HEVC (H265).

I'd like to be able to export individual clips maintaining the 10 bit resolution. I do however need the files to be in a delivery (and web upload) friendly format for sending to a stock footage website.

Looking around it looks like the Quicktime wrapper should have H265 export - however, this is missing from my options. I've tried some of the other 10 bit options (DNxHR etc.) but the files are massive and not exactly web upload friendly.

The Studio Version is running on a AMD Ryzen 1700 with NVIDIA 1050ti card.

Is this a limitation of my hardware or am I being a dingbat?

So this doesn't exist for you under Deliver?

You should have the option under MP4, which is far more ubiquitous on the web.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi Jim,

There's no 10 bit option for me under MP4.

I may have mislead you slightly - by web friendly I meant the upload speeds/times to the stock footage website I use.

Hi Uli,

No, this is all I have:

There's no H265 option so I don't get the 10 bit option.

I upgrade to Studio 15.2.4 yesterday but still no H265 or 10 bit.

h.265 option availability seems to be linked to Nvidia GPU supporting NVENC...I don't get it with GT 1030 but I do with GTX 960 so I assume it really should be available for gtx 1050 Ti...do you have h.264/h.265 decode activated in Preferences/Decode Options - perhaps it activates encoding as well...I'm just guessing...

It shows up for me with hardware decode option disabled, right under H.264. Are you sure you installed the studio version? 1050 Ti is listed as having NVENC features required.

I can confirm that the 1050Ti provides H.265 support. However, on Windows, you don't have the 10 bit selection that Uli shows in his screen shot (which is from a Mac).

Some people in the forum have commented that some NVIDIA drivers did not provide H.265 support, so you might try a different driver.

It's kind of sad that an opensource free program like StaxRip supports almost everything on every GPU and that Davinci Resolve is limited this way. 10 bits it not special in 2019, same counts for AMD hardware en/decoding.

I checked my encoding options under Quicktime and did not see H.265 listed. After updating the Win 10 drivers for my GTX 1070, it's now listed as an encoding option. My drivers were perhaps 3 years old.

You da man!

Installed latest NVIDIA drivers as of 01/03/2019 (Windows update stuck at 09/09/2017).

Slightly different options to what I expected for "Encoder":

DR - nvidia.jpg

The encoding profile can be "Main" or "Main10". Using FFPROBE on the generated files gives "yuv420p" and "yuv420p10le" respectively that I'm assuming is 8 versus 10 bit encoding.

Thanks for the additional info, PC users!
I didn't consider Nvidia to be needed since no current Mac is using their GPUs.
AFAIK, they use Intel Quick Sync for encoding. But I suppose you folks are much better off with Nvidia, since the Mac is dead slow for 10 bit encoding, only 8 bit is hardware accelerated.

Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure on Mac they use MacOS libraries to encode, which is why it was available there first.

I have NVidia 1060 GTX 3GB, Resolve Studio 16 and Win10 Pro(1903) - 24 GB RAM.

I can't find h.265 encoding :( What can cause it? Not enough VRAM? Driver? Etc?

Thanks

I saw a comment on another post left by one of the BM staff that more than 3.5 GB on your graphics card is needed before GPU encoding is turned on.

Hi - Can you please confirm that I am unable to encode in H265 on Windows 10 (I have an NVidia GeForce GTX 1080 Graphics with latest drivers installed) as I have installed Da Vinci 16.2 (Free) and can only see MP4 with H264 option for Deliver.
Thank you

That is correct. Requires the Studio version for H.265 rendering.

I note the wink - however on a serious note I do not understand how the same software for two platforms has a feature such as encoding H265 available for free on MacOS yet we have to pay $299 to get for Windows 10?

OK - thanks. This is a shame - especially as Olive (freeware) can export/encode H265 on Windows, not sure which licence that is using.

There is a lot of freeware based on ffmpeg. That is tolerated, but it's a gray zone.
You can't use those codecs as a commercial manufacturer.

That said, the x.265 encoder in ffmpeg is very good anyway. I always render a master file in a good mezzanine codec and then encode with one of the free tools, which also gives me more access to fine-tuning.
Try Handbrake or Shutter Encoder (donationware).
