Full live streaming system for church - HELP

PostFri Jun 19, 2020 3:59 pm

Hello everyone. First time posting here.
I need a fresh pair of eyes on a system we're designing. We are a traditional church (Cathedral style) in a large sanctuary (distance of about 100ft from "stage" to rear balcony) - looking to set up a scalable 3-5 camera system for streaming. We'll need to include lower thirds with text plus the occasional intro or mid service video.
So far, we're thinking of:
3 Panasonic AW-UE70 4K (PTZ). (we're streaming in 1080, but 4K is so we don't have to change cameras in the future).
Blackmagic ATEM Prod Studio 4K. (switcher for the cameras (via SDI) and iMac (via Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI)
Blackmagic ATEM M/E Adv Panel (to hardware-control the PTZ cameras/ switcher)
21” 3iMac .6GHz Quad 1TB 4K display running ProPresenter 7 for the overlays
Boxcast encoder and streaming service (for website, Youtube, Facebook live)

plus cables, connectors, multiview display, tv, etc.
Audio comes pre-mixed from the console into the ATEM Prod Studio via XLR

Given the expertise of our volunteer base, we'd rather go the route of the ATEM M/E controller instead of software control.

SO, questions...
1) Is there anything we're missing/ not thinking of?
2) Any experience on the Panasonic PTZ and the ATEM Prod Studio and M/E Panel? In other words, do they talk to each other? Any hiccups between the 2?

Seriously appreciate any help/ input you may have.
THX!

The ATEM switchers will only provide CCU control for the BMD cameras with built-in SDI interfaces (except the Mini and Mini Pro which only work with the Pocket Cinema 4K/6K cameras, though none of the other switchers work with those...).

There is at least one third-party product to bridge CCU control to other camera brands, including some Panasonics, but I'm not sure if those particular cameras would work or not:

If you want CCU control from the switcher you will need to take that into account.

Have you considered the TV Studio Pro 4K with its built-in control surface and converters rather than the Production Studio 4K and external panel?

you need to get a qualified consultant involved before you spend lots of money on things that won't play together...

ATEM will not control Panasonic PTZ, even with the advanced panel. Bad plan to start with even if it would work. You want a separate controller for the cameras. 100ft back is a long reach for a 20x zoom, and don't for a second believe that the digital extender will make you happy.

I'd skip the ATEM PS4k, too feature poor. Unless all you want is cuts between cameras and a simple overlay. Anything else is pretty much beyond its reach. No extra outputs for projectors/ancillary monitoring. ATEM 1 M/E is a much better choice.

4k streaming is years away for the masses IMO. And until your audience graduates to 40" monitors or better you won't notice the difference of being 1080 - when it's done right. save yourself the expense of 4k now. by the time 4k is really mainstream you'll want to upgrade the whole kit anyway for better features.

sorry to bear the bad news, but i've had to fix all too many systems like the one you are starting. at great expense.

Thanks!

The TV Studio Pro 4K looks interesting. I'll look into it, but so far it looks like that is both a switcher and camera control in one. Is that right?

If that's the case, and since I can still change the cameras... then 3 more questions.

1) IN order to get CCU crtl, I would then get a couple of BMD cameras. But I don't see any typical PTZ like the Panasonic. Does that mean I can get BM Micro Studio 4K cameras straight into the TV Studio Pro? If so - how do I make it PTZ? Is there a BMrig for that camera which I can control with the TVStudio Pro?

2) And the cameras (or their rigs I guess)... how do they connect to the TVStudio Pro? SDI?

3) If I get the BM Micro Studio 4K cameras... can it take regular DSLR Canon lenses?

Thanks!

you will need to get the panasonic camera controller with those, and also pull an RS485 or IP network for control

Blackmagic ATEM Prod Studio 4K. (switcher for the cameras (via SDI) and iMac (via Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI)
Blackmagic ATEM M/E Adv Panel (to hardware-control the PTZ cameras/ switcher)

that won't work for controlling the panasonic cameras.
a television studio pro 4k may be more appropriate, this includes mixer and control panel in one box

21” 3iMac .6GHz Quad 1TB 4K display running ProPresenter 7 for the overlays

it may be cheaper to get a mac mini with appropriate (and larger for a similar price) monitor(s)...
also, the mac mini can be installed in a rack-mount

Boxcast encoder and streaming service (for website, Youtube, Facebook live)

considering the pricing for this, you may find it cheaper to get a pair of atem mini pro

plus cables, connectors, multiview display, tv, etc.
Audio comes pre-mixed from the console into the ATEM Prod Studio via XLR

you may need a pair of audio delay boxes here (behringer shark)

Given the expertise of our volunteer base, we'd rather go the route of the ATEM M/E controller instead of software control.

no, the SDI signal is properly recognized. the control of the cameras however is a protocol issue

The Micro Studio camera 4K has a Micro 4/3 mount, not an EF mount, so you would use Micro 4/3 lenses (Panasonic, Olympus, etc.) rather than Canon lenses if you want optimal native functionality.

It would connect by SDI to the switcher and the switcher could control it by remote (note: you will need to connect two SDI cables if you want camera control - one to get the video from the camera to the switcher, and one to send the control data from the switcher to the camera).

You might want to take a look at this thread from last year:

Solid setup overall you’ve clearly thought this through. Just note that ATEM switchers don’t natively control Panasonic PTZ cameras, so you’ll need a separate PTZ controller or third-party software to handle movement.

Make sure your camera output matches the ATEM’s input settings (especially if downscaling from 4K to 1080p), and double-check your iMac-to-ATEM feed to avoid signal issues. ProPresenter works great for lower thirds — just route it cleanly into your key/fill channels if needed.

BoxCast is reliable, but if you ever want more control over video hosting, branding, or future monetization (like offering on-demand sermons), you might explore dedicated platforms like VPlayed that allow full ownership and website integration for church streaming platform.

You're 90% there — just fine-tune the PTZ control flow and video routing.
