Need larger source viewer during multicam

PostFri Jul 03, 2020 5:21 pm

Hi,

I'm doing a multicam edit. The grid of camera angles to select from in the source viewer is the most important thing to be able to see clearly, but I can't make it very large. If I hit Cinema Viewer (control-F), the timeline viewer goes full screen and I can't see the source viewer anymore. If I leave it in dual viewer mode, the camera angles are so small that I can't make critical decisions in real time while editing.

I'ts frustrating because I have three (!) monitors. 2 GUI monitors and one flanders reference connected by the decklink card. With all of those monitors, I'm still limited to a rather small source viewer, which is normally not a big issue when editing single cameras at a time, but with the grid of all the different camera angles in a multicam edit, you simply need a bigger viewer.

Am I missing something here? Can you actually make the multicam viewer/source viewer full screen?

Thanks,
O

+1, i asked this in another topic as well
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=99993&p=558405&hilit=Full+screen+source+monitor#p558405

Still waiting for the answer though..
Especially if a director comes to edit a concert, i would like to drop the multicam source viewer onto a bigger/seperate screen. Well, to be honest i want it all the time.

Yeah, in general I think it's hugely problematic that you can't have the active selection go full screen, regardless of what the active selection is. Only being able to turn the timeline viewer full screen is a major limitation and will mean that I won't be editing multicam in Resolve. I keep trying to make the official switch from Premiere to Resolve, but I keep running into major hurdles like this.

I don't have an FSI any more to check, but I was pretty sure there was a way to send the multicam source to it. Maybe the trick was single viewer mode? Right now, I have a normal TV as a second monitor, and if I select it as the video clean feed, it shows the 2x2 multicam source. You could also temporarily reduce the number of views displayed when you need to see more detail, down to 1x1 if necessary.

You can resize that, you know.

I agree with the OP. I wish there is a way to send it to one of the monitors so that the 4x4 source Multicam clips can be displayed larger.

Yes, you can drag the border between the preview window and the media clips below it down to increase the preview window up to about a 1/4 of the total monitor size real estate. Unless you have a 55 inch monitor, 1/4 size of a typical GUI monitor with a grid of 4, 6, or 9 multicam angles means that each angle is still tiny for making any serious real-time editing decisions, which is what that type of multicam grid is for. Thus, unless I'm missing something here, I still don't understand the design thinking behind this.

I need to be able to see all of my angles large enough to notice the details. To do that, they should occupy as much of the screen as possible. That's not complicated to pull off from a design/coding standpoint. I just don't yet see if it is possible, and if not, why? It is a rather obvious need for a multicam editor.

I totally agree regarding the need for:
a) Specifically, the ability to have a larger source viewer, up to at least the full size of one monitor
b), Generally, more UI flexibility, which has always been one of my major wishes for Resolve. It's made some improvements in recent releases, eg the Video Clean Feed. But in general its UI is still quite limited in terms of options and flexibility, and behind the competition in this regard.

In this specific example:
What I do as a multi-monitor user, is use Dual Screen + Full Screen timeline, moving the viewers to the second screen and make the Timeline take the whole of your main screen. On the second screen you can then drag down the Media Pool (which unfortunately you cannot hide completely - another frustrating UI limitation) down to about 30% of the screen height.

On my system, with my second monitor being 1920x1200, this gives me a Multicam viewer which is 960x540, ie exactly half the width and height of my 1920x1080 project resolution.

Is that what you're doing already?

I actually managed to trick Resolve into giving me a full 1920x1080 Multicam viewer on my second monitor:
1. With Dual Screen + Full Screen Timeline enabled as usual, I then opened macOS' Mission Control and dragged the Resolve window on the second screen, onto my main 4K screen
2. This resized it to 4K
3. I then used Mission Control to drag it back to the second screen, where it remained resized to 4K and therefore only the top left 25% was visible. Fortunately this top 25% is exactly what's needed to see the Source/Multicam viewer, which now took up nearly the entire screen.
4. I could not therefore see the Timeline viewer, but I could have used Video Clean Feed for this.

A dirty trick and I don't know if it would be possible on Windows, but theoretically useful to other macOS dual-screen users. A further downside is once I put the Resolve windows back to normal, I could no longer resize the partition between the viewers and Media Pool; a Resolve UI bug that I've experienced once before as well. I had to use Workspace -> Reset UI Layout (again, something I've had to do several times before in other UI bug situations), which is always a bit irritating as it resets a bunch of things that have to be configured again. Possibly the re-config could be avoided by using a Workspace Layout, which I need to get around to setting up.

Anyway, totally agree regarding more UI flexibility. Very much needed. Fingers crossed for v17, though I won't be getting my hopes up too high.

Hello all.

Is there still no solution to this problem ?

I do a lot of multicam and this is one of the reason I'm not making the switch to Resolve for editing projects.

Having 3 big monitors and only being able to view multicam angles on 1/4 of a monitor's display is ridiculous.

The most frustrating thing is that you CAN display all angles using video clean feed, but that's only when viewing a multicam clip in the viewer window, when you're editing multicam clips in a timeline it's not possible...

I would have thought it would be something easy to implement. while in fusion you can select what goes to clean feed output, but while in edit it is locked to the program out. It would be good in the clean feed option to be able to select program or Source Viewer.

Not being a multicam user, please forgive me if I've got it wrong, but if I create a multicam clip I can run the source or timeline viewer with clean feed.
You can select either viewer in clean feed by using the Q key.

Wow, this thread is more than a year old and still no solution..?

I'm editing a music video with a 4 x 4 multi-cam view that I would love to be able to display all by itself on an external screen. I paid for a license for the Studio version. Why can I not put the multi-cam viewer on its own screen? This is pretty maddening...

Yes, this is really annoying. Actually, simply being able to resize the source viewer window to a very large size would suffice. This is what I do when working in FCPX or Premiere and it works fine (see screenshots). So we don't necessarily need a multicam external monitor output feature, but the ability to resize viewers to any size.

Has there been any response from Blackmagic after 4 years of requests, why they refuse to implement this feature ? Please Blackmagic, this seems to me like such an obvious and easy implementation, and would make many peoples lives so much easier. I mainly edit music videos for a choir with many menbers and takes for which I'm using multicams to the max. I'm destroying my eyes and neck by having to go close to the screen with my nose and trying to make out stuff in the tiny multicams. I whish I could just open the multicam view on my 2nd screen.

I even sometimes use an external screen magnifier tool, but it's too much of a hassle to work with it.

I finally made the switch to working multicam 100% in Resolve (before I was editing multicam on FCPX or Premiere then bring it to Resolve for finishing) , hoping that Blackmagic would implement this soon, and I'm so disappointed it's still not the case.

I hope that if enough people +1 this post we might get some attention. I also sent a feature request at the time, not sure this has an impact unless loads of people do it.

Obviously this is not a "bells and whistles" feature but it would be so much more useful than the next incredible AI thing...

Bitte liebe RESOLVE Programmierer dies schnell umsetzen!!!!!!

+1 Also a function to swap stacked timeline strip in shortcuts would be good, and when switching the timelines would be nice to have dual viewer on the same mode that is multicam, right now it defaults always to source mode.
If all of this is so hard at least make davinci remember the angle of the multicam when a user puts multicam clip of length 3-6 seconds into a folder in media. Right now all multicam clips default to angle1 that is so annoying. We work on a big project and want to safe that snippet for a trailer that we will do after we are done with the editing, but the multicam clips that we put into folder are all defaulted to angle1. Thank goodness I only work with 2-3 cams rarely 4cams.
If there's 6 cams and you save that clip into separate folder and have 40 that small clips that go to default angle1 it is frustrating to change all those angles back when we are doing the trailer video.

I doubt these features will be implemented as tiktokisation and youtubisation don't need any of these features. I bet those are the core customers of BM. Anyway good luck guys.

5 years passed, this obvious cam resizer function still has not been implemented. All this AI noise is saddening. But hey, at least we won't get replaced) Doing trailers, edits, this invisible human touch is amazing.

Still waiting for this feature, for the time being I use a workaround, while doing the final edit with the client (she like to see the options) I use 4 MON setup Laptop with its Hi Res mon, a portable Mon for 2nd GUI and a median picture mon for program viewing (Via a Ultra studio Mon) I then use OBS studio to slice the multiview and send it full frame to a 4th mon, this is better but oviously it is still only at the res on the main GUI Mon. I would be great to send a multiview to a 4k mon and get a least SD on a 25angle multicam. The Laptop is powerful and it needs to be as OBS does use a bit of resources to do the task
