Shared Nodes: Warn when changing locked nodes + Icon color

PostMon Jul 27, 2020 10:57 pm

(File this request under the general request for Resolve to add much needed improvements to it's error reporting )

I'd like to get a modal warning popup whenever I attempt to make changes to a selected Node which has been locked.

I spent a couple minutes today trying to figure out why my control panels weren't affecting the grade of a selected node. I was about to restart Resolve as a troubleshooting measure, when I finally noticed that the node was locked!

The UI should warn you if you try to modify a locked node (or at least it should be a user-preference), and as a related feature request, I wish the Lock icon was orange, so that it's clearly obvious in the node graph which nodes are locked. The icons display in the nodes are overloaded as it is, so it would be useful to make the lock icon more prominent.

This has tripped me up as well.

Shared Nodes: Warn when changing locked nodes + Icon color

PostSun Aug 02, 2020 6:46 pm

Thinking about it some more, maybe instead of making the lock icon a different color, it would be even better if ALL of the color controls for the selected node become “grayed out”, similar to my other feature request to make Disabled Grades more obvious:

viewtopic.php?f=33&t=117717

This way, it would be obvious that a node/grade is locked, without even having to look at the node graph for the lock icon.

I like that. Greyed out panels make it REALLY obvious that a node is locked.

Most definitely. There's no point in having interface controls available for interaction if interacting with the controls will not actually do anything!

Although the more I think about it, I can see that even this idea isn't perfect, because even if you grey out the interface, you still might not know what is causing the controls to be deactivated. If the controls are greyed out because the grade itself is disabled (rather than just a selected node), then you would want to immediately know that fact, without always having to mentally run down the list of possible reasons why the controls might be locked.

Perhaps the "grey out" state could have an additional contextual icon/text overlay that says "Node Locked" or "Grade Disabled", etc, depending on what caused the controls to be locked?

To my thinking, that would only happen if the selected node is locked. No other occasion.

As I mentioned in my reply, Disabled Grades are another state (as well as Disabled Nodes) in which you’d want the controls to be greyed out.

I would also want to extend this to a possible forthcoming “Lock Grade” feature, where the entire grade is locked.

We disagree on those other states. They have their own indicators.

I would favor grayed out controls only for a locked node.

I would love to be able to select a bunch of thumbnails and say "lock grade" and those grades will not be able to be changed until expressly say so.

Yes, that would be very handy to do. I'd go a step further and say it'd be nice to be able select a bunch of clips, then right click and choose "Lock Grade" and they couldn't be adjusted until you unlocked them.

I can't believe it's been almost 5 years since I started this thread, but this bit me in the butt again today.

I had a Film Look Creator node that I set a Lock on many weeks ago. But today I wanted to disable the Grain parameter on the node, so I clicked the "Enable Grain" checkbox, and the UI dutifully turned off the checkbox.

Of course, I was confused when I didn't see the grain turn off, and it took me several minutes of troubleshooting before I smacked myself in the forehead realizing that the node had a lock on it!

Locking nodes is a great feature. But the lack of obvious UI feedback is something that really needs improvement. If it's too monumental of an effort to "gray out" all grading/effects controls when a locked node is selected, I would still be happy with having a giant, ridiculously large lock icon on the node thumbnail so its clearly obvious that the node is locked. As it is, the tiny little lock icon is just way too easy to miss. Even just changing the color of the lock icon to an obnoxious red color or something would be better than nothing!
