Most definitely. There's no point in having interface controls available for interaction if interacting with the controls will not actually
do anything!
Although the more I think about it, I can see that even this idea isn't perfect, because even if you grey out the interface, you still might not know
what is causing the controls to be deactivated. If the controls are greyed out because the grade itself is disabled (rather than just a selected node), then you would want to immediately know that fact, without always having to mentally run down the list of possible reasons why the controls might be locked.
Perhaps the "grey out" state could have an additional contextual icon/text overlay that says "Node Locked" or "Grade Disabled", etc, depending on what caused the controls to be locked?
