Can an audio track be mono?

PostFri Aug 28, 2020 2:14 pm

Hi,
sorry if this is such a simple question, but I see so much varying information on this... I am importing mono audio files into Davinci, and they are just showing up on the left side. I know I can change the clip attributes and change the file to "stereo", but this there a way to simply change the track to mono, or does Davinci not have mono tracks at all?

I can't seem to find any information on whether I can create mono tracks for my audio.

thanks a lot.

Peace

The default tracks are stereo, but that can be configured. You can also change a track type, or create new mono tracks.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

If you right click in the track headers on the Edit or Fairlight pages and select Add Track, it will give you a choice of track types, Just select Mono.
If you are only importing mono files, in Preferences-Editing-User you can set the Audio Track Type to mono.
A single track mono file can be dragged into the Timeline where it will automatically create a mono track. This works in both the Edit and Fairlight pages.

Well, purely for purpose of the left/right soundstage it doesn't matter, but it matters for summing to actual mono (stems) and it also takes up one more 'voice' and thus increases the load on the CPU (a little).

Also on a personal note I quite prefer mono sources to be on mono tracks simply because it's neater.

Right click on the track header (to the left on the audio track timeline in Fairlight page), choose "change track type to..." and select mono. It will let you choose which channel (in a stereo or multichannel file) to use for the mono track.
