Bizarre Text scaling issue when nesting timelines

PostTue Sep 22, 2020 12:13 am

I'm having a weird issue with Text generators becoming incorrectly scaled when I nest the master timeline into another timeline that has a different resolution.

I have a 1920x1080 timeline, which I've added a forced 2.66 Letterbox over everything using Output Blanking. I added a simple Text generator over a clip in this timeline:

I nested this timeline into a new 1920x720 timeline (so I could render a version of the timeline without the baked in letterbox), and set the "Mismatched Resolution" timeline setting set to "Scale full Frame with Crop". For some reason, when nested in this timeline, the Text super gets incorrectly scaled down, relative to the original footage.

Just out of curiosity, I tried the other "Mismatched Resolution" settings, and bizarrely, the super was scaled the exact same way, in all variations!

"Stretch frame to all corners":

"Center Crop with No Resizing":

"Scale entire image to fit"

What on Earth is going on?

The Text+ titles don't have this issue.

I have seen some issues in the 16.3 Beta 2 with Scaling as well.

I'm thinking bug.

Hi,

I think it's a mix of "how it was built/not a bug but a feature" kind of scenerio.

Take a look at my post in this forum here about how nested content operates in strange ways in Resolve:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=118817

But the TLDR version is that some elements, like multicam sequences, compound clips and text clips scale differently when nested in different resolution timelines and don't scale like you imagine they should.

The workaround I have found is to keep the timeline the same resolution and only change the output format, so that text scaling stays the same at the timeline level and only scales down at the output stage.
