The million dollar question for me is still:
Does it work with the edit page?

Could someone from Black Magic Design please comment on this, as it has been asked multiple times?

I've been a "loyal" paid user of Resolve for 9 years, and will happily give them more money to buy the Speed Panel, even though I already have multiple licenses of Resolve Studio.

To my way of thinking, its the least I can do to support BMD's Resolve team, considering how much time and effort they've taken to constantly improve Resolve in those 11 years, as well as considering how much money my measly little one-time oniy $995 "investment" of a Resolve 7 license back in 2011 has made me since then.

I don't really consider myself "loyal" to BMD if I expect them to be giving me free hardware after only giving them $995 one time in 2011 (or $299, for later adopters of Resolve Studio), then subsequently making many, many thousands of dollars worth of profit using that same software.

To me this offer is a no-brainer purchase.

There should be no expectation from existing Resolve Studio license owners to get a free or discounted Speed Editor console. The price is reasonable enough. If you want to get it for free, buy another license of Studio - simple as that.

OK I'm in too :)

Are we just waiting for resellers to update their websites with the new bundle?

Anyone have a recommendation for a UK reseller?

Thanks!

i don't think anyone was claiming to be entitled to one, just that it's pretty poor marketing and leaves people feeling misled, is all. If it was posed as something like "purchases in the last 6 months get 10% off the keyboard, 3 months 20% and 1 month 50% off, the offer of free will last from now for 3 months after which it'll be $xxx dollars for all" i don't think people would have minded as much, or you know "hey, when 17 comes out there will be this great offer" but as it is, where it comes out the blue with no news ahead of time, it's just, kinda a crappy thing to do to your own customers, is all.

If it was inside the 14 days no-questions returns period of where i bought it from i'd have returned the product and re-bought the thing, but that isn't an option (for me, anyhow), and as a customer new the company it just leaves a bit of a sour aftertaste to what would hopefully be a new loyal customer going forwards over time, is all.

Do want one though. Personally I don't have that kind of money on hand so it's going to take me a good few months to save up for it. I mean, I just spent my cash on davinci. ╮(╯ _╰ )╭

I bought my copy of Resolve 16 Studio about 20 minutes before I received the email announcing v17. Is there any chance that I would have bought it and registered it if I knew that v17 was going to be free with an editor keyboard? Of course not. Have I even used the software yet? No.

Obviously Blackmagic aren't going to just hand out free Speed Editors to every recent purchaser, but I still feel completely let down that there doesn't appear to be any 'grace period' or way to return a recent purchase. I mean, 20 minutes. Is it poor marketing / PR? Probably not, but how am I supposed to feel when, with a little more notice, I could have made an informed decision?

Maybe I'm not Blackmagic's target market as I'm not spending thousands on hardware, but I bought Studio because my non-profit organisation just bought an ATEM Mini Pro ISO and I'm going to be using Resolve week in week out on a voluntary basis. I can't afford to just throw another $300 at Blackmagic for the Speed Editor just because it seems like a good deal.

In another word we are actually paying $299 for v17 since we don't get the Speed Editor, which ever way you look at it.

BTW I have more than one DaVinci Resolve Studio licenses, can I trade that back in to BMD in exchange for a Speed Editor instead? Seems fair.

I’m with @PuddlePounce!
Purchased Studio last month, and would have waited had I known. At the very least, a discount should be offered to recent purchasers. I’m an independent editor and every penny counts. My work is mostly for our non-profit community concert band doing free performances to keep musicians—who are stuck at home during the pandemic— playing their instruments. They are not paying me. Come on, BMD!

Also, when will the board be available? Called my reseller, and he was mystified. He gave me BMD’s phone number and asked me to get back to him after I called them. BMD told me to send their US Customer Support an email. Sounds like there might be some significant communications issues within the company.

I little more clarification would be nice.

1) Is it available now? When can we expect to be able to get it from resellers? I've visited several of the reseller websites and have seen no mention of it.

2) What does "for a limited time" mean? That's very vague. Are we talking days, weeks, months?

Don't see it that way. Prores Raw is big white elephant vs BRaw and probably define whether customers want to go with Resolve/Blackmagic cameras or go with a different system. BMD may be doing us a favour with Resolve updates and we should'nt fuss if we don't get a freebie but just staying loyal to its product also means at the expense of the competition. I turned down purchasing the Ursa Mini 12k, even the G2 because of how it treated the original UM4.6k owners and I don't want to be at risk allover again and unfortunately its is happening again.

That's alright. It's your decision what you want to do. I don't believe anyone cares. Certainly I don't. I'm happy with them making more money at some peoples expense because it will allow them to flourish their business... and in return have products that interest those who want to pay for it. Cheers.

You already have access to the stand-alone version of fusion. If you have a DR studio. Just download the fusion ver 17 and it will install using your installed activated DR studio license. (on the same computer)

I think that many resellers have a 30-day return policy. This maybe applies for software (s/n) so check and see. Also if you haven't registered that might help.

Every offer like this is going to leave someone disappointed -- but my advice is "get over it".

If they said "everyonewho's purchased in the past six months gets a free speed editor" then those who purchased six months and one day ago would be feeling miffed -- so there's little point in that.

Suck it up... sometimes you get dealt a good hand, sometimes not so good. It all averages out over a lifetime.

Remember that if you were using many other NLEs, not only would you be asked to pay money for the new version but there'd be no free give-aways when you did.

Glass half full or glass half empty... that is YOUR decision to make but trust me, if you always take "half full" perspective, life is much more fun!

Why would they?

Anyone who makes a new purchase of Resolve can get the Speed Editor bundle as long as the deal is valid. Doesn't matter if you already have a license.

And consider the value proposition here. There really isn't a hero suite on the market any more other than Resolve. That was Rio, which in the software only version cost $30,000.

Plus, having an extra license means that you have an extra license. I sometimes double mine up so that I can work on one machine while rendering with another.

And then there's the collaboration side of things, which is also a big plus for Resolve.

I kinda understand that someone who bought the Studio version the same day as V17 and the speed editor was announced would feel upset.

And to the ones who say "Suck it up":
You would feel upset as well, wouldn't you?

I also believe that some kind of soft period before the release would be nice. Say: The ones who bought a studio version the same day, get a speed editor for free, 1 week before, 80% off, 2 weeks before, 50% off, and before that, you're out of luck. At least that's how I would have done it if I were responsible of it.

Did BMD do deals like this before?
Or was it a total surprise that they would offer something like this?

Also, if you are one of the ones who bought the studio version shortly before V17 was announced: You can still get another studio license with a speed editor. And keep in mind that you will have that license basically forever, if BMD keeps its policy of free updates. You never know when it might come in handy.
So, yes, it's a disadvantage. But still... it's not that bad.

Timo, I'm in agreement. I just bought the license two weeks ago. I checked B&H and they said the item is non-returnable. So, I'll likely buy DR 17 to get the editor and sell the extra license. That will give me a discount at least.

The sting for me is the same thing just happened with Capture One. Just bought a license and then they put out a new version and I have to buy another license to get it. Ugh.

Funny thing is, that I've been hemming and hawing about getting the Pocket 6K. Mainly over money. Now there's no way since I don't feel its worth buying then having them announce the Pocket 12K tomorrow. Luckily that's a want, not need, item so I'll wait until whatever comes out next in the Pocket/Micro line.

And I got the Dongle Version +Keyboard for the 225+VAT.

I really wish there was an easier way to buy BMD products. In the country I live in there are very few places carrying BMD stuff, and the ones that do add an extra 30% markup to the US RRP....

On that note - I think the BMD website advertises pricing in local currency with local GST added? Because the currency conversion from USD 299 to local currency does not add up unless I add 18% GST... however the local dealer I purchased from added another 18% GST claiming the website price was the base price... :?

Chris Leutger wrote:Timo, I'm in agreement. I just bought the license two weeks ago. I checked B&H and they said the item is non-returnable. So, I'll likely buy DR 17 to get the editor and sell the extra license. That will give me a discount at least.

Oh, I didn't know that Davinci Resolve licenses can be sold. In that case, I would change my statement about them offering a discount a little bit, because you can get a discount through selling the license anyway.
For how much money did you sell it?

I posted this earlier...why would anyone buy someone's extra license now when they can get the free editor keyboard if they buy a full-price version? Maybe if you were selling an extra license for less than $100.00...maybe. Otherwise for the foreseeable future the aftermarket sale of resolve licenses is pretty much zero.

I don't think the speed editor will come along with the license forever. The Davinci license will still be good however. I'll just wait until the promo is over then sell the 17 license. And when I said discount, I meant sell it for $100.

How to claim DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor with studio

PostWed Nov 11, 2020 8:35 pm

Hi - I am trying to get the package deal of the Free DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor when you purchase the DaVinci Resolve Studio. I've looked at the resellers websites and not not find any information related to how we get the deal. Does anyone know, too good of a deal to pass up!

2 will the activation key/serial. Still work with 17
As yet I see no reseller offering this but it will take time for it to appear

1. Unknown. I would like to know the answer to this myself.
2. Yes, if you buy 16 Studio you can still get 17 Studio; BMD never charges for next versions

Great to read Resolve editors will finally get the sort of editing speed & precision we Lightworks editors have enjoyed for what, about thirty years now. Great pricing too, especially with the combined Studio package.

This is what I got from a UK retailer today who has listed both DR17 and the SPeed Editor for sale, he said:

"This is the press release we had from Blackmagic today "Any customer who orders a DaVinci Resolve Studio Licence will now receive a FREE Speed Editor. Conversely, they are also including a FREE copy of DaVinci Resolve Studio with any purchase of a Speed Editor."

So according to this whichever way round you buy it you will get the 2nd part of the bundle.

I'd love for BMD to confirm this if they can, also when they expect to start shipping.

How do you know that it will work in the edit page?

Exactly! Also, regarding the other inquiry, I know they have 3 other control panels. I was asking if a $295 speed color panel will be in the future.

The only other cow I have with this and Resolve 17 is the focus was mostly on the CUT page. Why not the EDIT page? I don't know anyone who tried and like the cut page at all. :(
All I know is that the Editor keyboard (which is essentially this one’s big brother), works in the Edit page for me. I’m using it right now.
The functionality is different, but the wheel works, and trim functions apply to the nearest edit point in either direction. In/out points. Transition durations, insert edits. All works.
I don’t like the cut page either, but may grow to like it as new features appear and this panel becomes available.

I'm looking forward to this getting into peoples' hands so they can review it and fill in some gaps. I'm interested in how this will work in the Edit page, and wether it can be used in any other apps. I'm also in the basic "Don't buy stuff on preorder before reviews are out" mode.

But I do understand how there are people for whom the US$1k keyboard doesn't make sense, but where their workflow would mean this gizmo will save them an hour or more a week, thus the panel would be a good value for them, with or without the extra license.

Also, the question about dongle vs. code was raised. Why do some people want a dongle over a license code?

Is this true? You mean I no longer need to use my Fusion dongle if I use V17? I'll be really happy if that's the case, but the download page says this: "This version requires a Fusion Studio license dongle".

I don't get people complaining about not getting the speed editor for free. Resolve is such a cheap piece of software anyway.

I just looked at the web page for the supplier I purchased Resolve and Fusion Studio from and they are selling the speed editor for around the same price as Resolve. Seems an acceptable price for what it is to me. I'm tempted, however, to get the bundle for the extra Resolve license even though I doubt I'll ever use it.
