Which Lens's to buy for M43 BMCC

PostThu Aug 08, 2013 5:40 am

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum. I am about to purchase my first ever cinema camera (the BMCC 2.5k) I'm really excited, however I have never owned a m43 camera before.

I want to start with 1-2 lens's to get me going.

However I am not very familiar with all these old and new cine style brands (voigtlander, SLR etc)

I would like to to get a lens that can 'almost' replicate a wide angle ( i know this is hard because of the crop factor ) and then a portrait style lens, would be a plus if It could act as a zoom as well :)

I'm just running of what I know from previous camera situations, remember this is very new to me, so if there is anything I should know. Please don't hesitate to tell me.

Thanks a lot,

Darmon

the Canon 6.6-66 seems like it would be good match but it's like $8k

Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 Nokton Manual Focus Lens for Micro 4/3 Mount
SLR Magic 12mm T1.6 Hyperprime Lens = 28mm – Still within 'Wide Angle'

Good choice?

Wide angle and portrait covered.

Zoom can come later :)

What are you currently using for wide and for portrait and on what camera?

You usually want to start with three prime lenses: wide, normal, portrait or medium telephoto. You can use a normal lens for portrait but you probably don't want to get too close with that unless you like distorted noses. I feel staying at least five feet from your subject is a starting point but ten feet is better for portraits. Pick a lens that gives you the angle of view you want to fill the frame as you like (a portrait can be very tight on the face or show even a medium close up of head and torso). It is your style. Same goes for what you want in a wide (extreme wide to cover a large group indoors or just wide enough for a couple of people full height indoors).

I'd recommend focal lengths of 12mm, 24 or 25mm, 35 or 40mm on the BMCC. One option as others indicate is the SLR Magic 12mm T1.6 and the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 zoom. Good primes are usually sharper than a zoom, but the new Sigma is quite impressive at f/2.8 to f/4 for wide and normal and very good in the centre wide open for portraits so a versatile lens.
