Sharing raw footage

PostThu Aug 08, 2013 7:39 am

I've been looking for a place to share big videos with the people I work with. Seems like many others are also facing the problem of sharing raw footage due to its large size and bandwidth limitations. I came across this site called Copy while loading some raw footage posted by others. It's like dropbox but what makes it special now, is that they have a promotion that allows you to stack up free space without maximum limitation, 5GB for each user you invite. You get 15GB when register, 5GB when install their dropbox style application and then 5GB for every person you invite. So you can grab your account now at Copy and make sure you have enough space to share your projects for years to come. However, If you intend to use it as a private backup service for your files, please don't trust it (or any other cloud service) as your only place of backup.

Get free account HERE!

DISCLAIMER: I'm not affiliated with the site Copy, I'm sharing it for two reasons:
1) It solved a problem I've had for long time on sharing the videos. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem.
2) If you join you and I both get 5GB so yes, it benefits me.
If moderation thinks this is a problem, then I apologise. Feel free to delete this post and I'll not mention this again.

Hi,
I think that the cheapest way is to rent a dedicated server, because for 30€ you can have 2 To !
But you have to install a FTP server, that can take maybe a day or two if you never touch linux.
The "best" dedicated server is the nearest of you, choose it with a datacenter near of you.

We are talking about FREE way here. It's also lot easier method for those who aren't wizards on computer networking. I have a server for myself but it is not free. Many people sharing the RAW footage also face the bandwidth limitations.. which means their websites go offline when certain amount of traffic in gigabytes is reached. If you put hundreds of megabytes worth of RAW footage on your server and have dozens or even hundreds of people downloading them your reach your monthly limits very quickly. Of course you can have bigger limits if you pay more.

I have 145 gigabytes free space on Copy now. I hope to stack up some more before the 5gb/invite campaign ends. There's no limitations on traffic and sharing is easy.

BTW. To those registering. Remember to check the email validation link in your mailbox. When you install the software, you have to actually run it and log in for your extra 5gb to appear. I heard that the program won't work below 10.7 OSX. If you don't have that but planning to upgrade, you can always install their phone application first and start gathering your space.

Yeah, RAW requires expensive SD cards or SSD's, a monster machine with tons of HDD space & more *time* to get stuff done. If you can handle that in your workflow & project, renting a few hundred gigs a month or much more should not be an issue financially in any way. That, and you probably can handle the "complexity" of setting up a server or get someone to do it for you.

If its an issue, just shoot ProRes or H.264, i.e don't bite off more than you can chew.

Seems to me like you started this thread just to get your affiliate link used by folks for some extra 5GB bonuses.

With raw footage I didn't mean just RAW, but any original unedited footage from the camera. Like I said I ALREADY have a server (and it is even without bandwidth restrictions). But if you look at the movie making blogs, you can see them referring to how expensive running a site is so some people seem to really be facing the problem... or then they are just faking to be self-gracious on doing good for others on their own cost.

There are dozens of newbies asking help on camera/lens choices on this forum. They don't even understand the basic specs without someone explaining them one by one. These people are also going to be shooting lots of footage. They also seem to be on very limited budget.

RAW, ProRes or H264 is not the issue here. I can afford to get as many SSDs I need, I can figure out the best workflow, I have already setup a FTP sever for myself... this topic is not about the cost and complexity of shooting. I was still excited when I came across the site Copy, because I've been using dropbox before and it is so much more convenient that using FTP. Automatic synchronisation across all the devices is great. I'm sure internet/programming wizard can come up with a solution for this in FTP too... but the fact that I can afford to shoot RAW doesn't mean that I need to spend either lots of money on the IT guy or lots of time researching it myself when this problem has already been solved for FREE. For sharing footage (or other files) you can never have enough methods. If you have worked around the world you will know that sometimes internet doesn't work as well and sometimes certain services/servers are just slow... sometimes you can't even access all the services. Connection timed out.

Yes, which I clearly stated in my first post! But I wouldn't have shared it if it really wouldn't have solved something. I shared this thing on one other website and there people actually thanked me for letting them know about it. If you don't like it, maybe you shouldn't comment on it and allow the topic to be bumped back up.

Simply Torrent the files, you can use uTorrent to Create Your Own Torrent and then use uTorrent public trackers, It can still be made a private torrent.
I do this all the time with friends and sometimes clients.

Here is a tutorial,
