Installation Question - Uninstall necessary?

PostMon Feb 01, 2021 9:55 pm

Using the free version of 17. (Waiting for 2 months for Studio 17 w/speed editor)
I just read that I should have been uninstalling the previous version before installing the new version.
Have not been doing that.
Is there anything I can do now to ensure that Resolve is operating optimally since I did not do the uninstalls over the past few months each time I installed a new version.
Going forward, when the next beta version is released, I will do the backups, and uninstall the current version, but for right now I'm wondering if I have corrupted any configs. (Other than the very slow startup compared with version 16, I don't think I have any other issues, although I am not an advanced user)

Uninstall to install a new version is generally not required.

The only scenario where you absolutely have to uninstall first is on Windows, to install an older version.

Thanks - feel a lot better now ! hahah I am on Windows 10 but so far have not had any reason to install an earlier version so sounds like I haven't done any "damage" by not uninstalling first. Thanks again.

I generally don't Uninstall first.

When upgrading to Beta 5 (or later) it was recommended, but that's unusual.

When moving from Free to Studio, you will need to Uninstall first.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I went from 16 Free to 17 Studio without uninstalling and no adverse effects that I'm aware of, other than the unrelated ones reported in the forum.

The pre-install notes for 17 beta say:

For those using DaVinci Resolve or DaVinci Resolve Studio on Windows, we strongly recommend uninstalling previous versions prior to installing 17 Public Beta 5 and higher versions. Going forward, all Fairlight, grading and editor keyboard firmware updates will be managed from the DaVinci Control Panels Setup utility.

This is not very clear.

For example, if I am on Windows 10 and Resolve 16.2.7 and I want to install Resolve 17 beta 5 or higher, what exactly needs to be uninstalled? Is it just the Resolve application? Do we need to also uninstall panels? Keyboards? And what is the recommended uninstall method?

It would be great to have explicit instructions for this process. Thank you for any clarification.

All I have ever done is uninstall the DaVinci Resolve program folder, unless other components are updated, with no problems.

As to uninstalling, in the page shown highlight the file you wish to remove and click uninstall.

If a new version of Resolve requires other components to be updated, these will have their boxes checked in the installer.

As an aside, if you are updating from say version 16.2.7 to 17.xxx, make sure you make a copy of your database first. Version 17 of Resolve requires a database update which makes it incompatible with previous versions, should you wish to go back to the older version.

@Charles, thank you for your response. That is helpful.

Good looking out on the database backup. I am strict about exporting drps of my projects several times a day, but it's always a good idea to remember to backup the database before upgrading, even if you create a new database for each new major Resolve version, as I do.

I should have said "Using Windows..."

As Windows is the de facto standard operating system for planet earth, I tend to answer from that viewpoint.

So, since I'm hoping that my Studio version will arrive soon, the conflicting recommendations below still make it unclear whether an uninstall of the free version would be optimal/smart before installing Studio.

If there are no further replies to this, I'm guessing I'll go with the recommendation from Black Magic's Dwaine Maggart should be followed, yet someone posted the pre-install notes for 17 beta that strongly recommended an uninstall first. Ugh!

The guidance to uninstall previous versions when installing 17b5 referred to previous 17 beta versions and was a one time thing.

If you are not on Windows, you can install any version over any version at any time.

If you are on Windows, you can't install the same version or an older version without uninstalling first.

The same version scenario would be if you have the free version installed, and you want to install the same version of Studio. You'd need to uninstall the free version first.

So, if you had 17.0 free installed, and wanted to install 17.0 Studio, you'd need to uninstall 17.0 free first.

If you had 17.0 free installed, and you wanted to install 17.1 Studio, you don't need to uninstall the free version first. You can install 17.1 Studio over 17.0 free, because 17.1 is a newer version.

If you had 17.1 free or Studio installed, and you wanted to go back to 16.2.8, free or Studio, you'd need to uninstall 17.1 first.

And again, all the above is only for Windows.
