Effects preset

PostWed Feb 10, 2021 8:14 am

As suggested by another user, I just wanted to make a post to say that the ability to create effect presets (in addition to transition presets) would be VERY useful.

+1 Yes, this is a glaring omission. Imagine trying to use that very nice Film Damage FX to make all your clips look consistent and having to enter the same 30 settings on EVERY clip manually!

I think you can apply the effect to an Adjustment Clip, customize it, then copy it to a Power Bin. You can then drag it onto your Timeline, right-click and choose copy, then click your clip and Paste Attributes>Plugins.

Hello.

I have just read this and am happy to show anyone how to make presets, BM includes the option to have 6 presets in any macro, .setting file. You can also add extra tools in the inspector to select different presets. For example, you can have a combo control with 99 versions of your effect, so when you drag the effect over the clip you can change the parameters in the inspector with just presets in the combo control.

You can also duplicate any effect then add 6 more presets and add them to the effects library. The Adjustment clip and power bin work well and can be used with great effect but if you want something more permanent and in the effects library this is possible.

This might help but message me if you have specifics.

Hello

I was asked on several forums and social media to record a video so did one last night. It is at the bottom of the blog post.

I am currently building a "DSLR" style effect called viewfinder with 6 different camera viewfinders all with 6 versions (presets) so will record my screen and let you know when it is complete.

Hi

I just saw another way of saving presets and it means you can have as many as you wish.

This example is a title but works on any .setting file.

Initial set up
Drag title to timeline
select title
Go to Fusion Page
Change Settings
Right-click on the Name of the title in the inspector or the title node
Select save as (save anywhere on your computer.)

To use that preset
Drag the title to the timeline
Select it & go to the fusion page
Right-click on the name of the title or node
Select "Load"
Select the file you saved earlier and it updates the settings.

Not as easy as the 6 versions but expands the possibilities to have 100's of presets.

There are lots of things in DAWS that DR could take inspiration from. Effect presets are just the tip of the iceberg.

As a UI/UX developer, I'm happy to get involved. Blackmagic, hit me up!

All the best,
Dax.

GrizzlyAK wrote:+1 Yes, this is a glaring omission. Imagine trying to use that very nice Film Damage FX to make all your clips look consistent and having to enter the same 30 settings on EVERY clip manually!

Cheap workaround:

1) in one node, create the Film Damage effect settings you want. Make sure it's correct.

2) copy that node to the clipboard.

3) go to a new empty shot (one empty node only), and paste that Film Damage node.

4) create a title on the Edit timeline for this clip that says "FILM DAMAGE 1" (or whatever you want it to say) and make it big and visible.

5) on the Color page, label the node as "FILM DAMAGE 1" (or whatever).

6) in a PowerGrade bin, save this grade as a PowerGrade. Label the PowerGrade as "FILM DAMAGE 1."

Now, assuming you have a Fixed Node Tree structure, you could drag the PowerGrade down to (say) empty node #11. Once Film Damage 1 is in that node, highlight that node, then highlight all subsequent clips that you want to affect. Go up to the Color menu and choose "Ripple Node Changes to Selected Clips," and now all those clips will have the exact same Film Damage effect applied in that same node. (Another method would be to do it as a Post-Clip Group Grade, and that can work as well.)

Beware: this is not undoable, so use caution when you perform this operation.

I can say that BorisFX and SapphireFX both do provide savable User Presets in pretty much all of their OFX plug-ins. I think it would be a great idea if Blackmagic provided the same capability in all their OFX plug-ins as well... but my workaround can do it, to a point.

This is just sad. I haven't actively used Resolve in a bit due to working on a soundtrack in another DAW (that does MIDI). Is it just me, or has BMD seemed to have put the brakes on innovation in their Resolve product over the last year or two? The progress they made between V15 and V17 was astonishing, like they were going to rule the world, then... ?

And does anyone else think that voting for feature requests on a user forum is as useful as owning a pig farm for the eggs?

DaVinci Resolve is far more advanced than Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X on so many things, yet in both of them I can make a preset easily with one or more VFX, in Resolve I can't.

Also would be nice to be able to drag and drop each FX stacked in the inspector rather than having to click on it and then click that arrow up several times if that effect is at the bottom and I want to put it at the top.

This would be quite important, especially for stabilization in my case. I generally continuously open the inspector to change from perspective to translation, with my preferred parameters. Having to do it every single time because there are no presets (auto-loaded, I would add!!!) is quite annoying.

Effect presets should have been implemented many, many years ago.
BMD is always 4-6 years late on basic stuff.

+1

BTW BMD, if you implement this, don't forget to add the ability to load a preset for multiple element selected on the timeline.

Same thing with basic settings. If we have a drop shadow on 5 clips, when selecting them all and changing something in the inspector, it should change the settings on all clips.

Please don't just stop at the literal feature request. Be more enterprising in your approach.

And fix the way we can apply/modify the regular settings (and OFX settings) applied on multiple clips at the same time.

So when the presets are implemented, we won't have to battle again for years to be able to use them on multiple elements on the timeline at once.

+1 Make it work like audio effect presets is the best way imo, for consistency and because i think the workflow with audio fx is good. (Consistency matter because it makes the program easier to learn and to remember, because you can apply principles you already learned to other aspects of the software.)

audio effect presets.png
audio effect presets.png (14.02 KiB) Viewed 2471 times

So it could have:
-a plus icon on the left to add presets
-a dropdown to switch between presets
-(left right arrow, could be implemented but its not that relevant and could take up too much space)
-a set as default option
-a preset manager button, where you can save defaults/import/export/delete presets

Thanks for the work you do blackmagic, amazing software and policy!

Re: Effects preset

What I don't understand is this. Resolve allows to save custom presets, but for transitions. If you configured one of the most complex transitions that have several options, and you want to save it, you right click on it, and select "Create transition preset". And in this regard is way better than Premiere, which at least the last time I used it, 2023, still couldn't save them as presets, not even their length, so if you wanted to apply a crossfade to several clips, you had to go into the preferences and change the default length. In Resolve you can save length and parameters.

Then why not the same thing for the OFXs? I mean, simple presets like the transitions, not workarounds going to the Fusion or Color pages.

Maybe it is much more difficult. I can't think of a reason why BMD wouldn't dedicate some time to this when it's been asked for by so many users for so long. But if it's really hard, it still needs to be done.
