Is 17 ready for work?

PostTue Mar 02, 2021 9:33 pm

Has anyone encountered anything that would prevent you from working with the latest version of 17 on a job?

I’ve only noticed little things, but nothing that would prevent me from working with it.

Has there been anything like export glitches, codec issues, anything thing you can’t really work around?

Thanks!

For me, even beta 9 was ready for work.
But then, it’s MacOS and any auto-updates are off on my machines.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

We're planning to change over to 17 next week, following the installation of the new Advanced Panel buttons (which finally arrived). The new features -- particularly HDR/Zone Grading, the Color Warper, and Magic Mask -- are going to be great additions to the toolset.

I’ll be upgrading after a current project closes out. Other colorist (via WhatsApp) have confirmed it’s stable enough.
But be warned the Color Warper is “destructive” (not 32 float) just like High Soft can’t be “undone”.
Use with caution.

I do not recommend it to you. It contains many bugs and is unstable. Not yet suitable for serious work.

Been using it since beta 7 or 8 for production. Edit, Fairlight, Fusion, Export, very little Color page. No crashes, no dealbreaker bugs for me. The most annoying thing I can think of atm is that the first render for a given timeline in export page will always disregard the "In/Out range" setting and switch back to "entire timeline".

Has it been confirmed this is expected behavior and not a bug?

I upgraded a large feature doc project early in the beta (3) to do color work and a little edit trimming. I've managed to work around most of the issues the arose with shots and sound that didn't show up on the timeline. Color Page is much more stable than the Edit page which crashes often enough. The new features are terrific so I'd say start a new project with it and don't expect it to be stable.

yikes, I just saw this :( Real shame as the tool is really cool but this limits its usefulness.

I guess it would depend on teh level of work being carried out. For us - mostly corporate/commercial work and a bit on short film etc, DR17 has been really stable - better then DR16, has some much better tools and tricks, and the speed editor is working really well for our workflow.

Seems some haven't been as lucky as we have and are having stability issues - but then people did even with the latest DR16 update, and 15, and 14....and PPro, and photoshop and chrome and outlook and..and and...

Only one way to find out if its stable enough for you - just remember to backup your database first.

Unknown. Can confirm that TimeInPixels Nobe Color Remap uses full float but I don’t have first hand use experience. https://timeinpixels.com/nobe-color-remap-guide/
