PC Building in Times of Graphics card scarcity

PostWed Mar 03, 2021 8:32 am

Hi!

I'm sorry for asking a question that is probably a variation of things that have been asked a million times before here!

I'm moving from Mac to PC, and building my own SFFPC, on which I plan to run Resolve Studio. I don't need 4k, just FullHD will do (I'm a musician and doing video to promote my music mostly).

Although I could use some advice on which exact processor etc. to get, my main issue at the moment is this:

=> Does it make any sense to buy all the components and work with a relatively cheapo graphics card until the market has cooled down enough to get an rtx 3060ti at a decent price?

I'm planning for a PC with AMD Ryzen 9, 32GB Ram for the rest. The idea is to be able to edit, add effects and work with typography on a different level than I can now with my 2013 MacBook Pro.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Makes sense, if you can find a 1660 card for a decent price it should run HD just OK for you.

Thanks for your reply!

Well I was thinking more along the lines of 1030 or even more basic. Is that in any way workable?

The thing is, I planning my first editing projects somewhere May/June and would like to get my system up and running by then to work as efficiently as possible.

We actually bought a new system this week. The way we did it was to just request a quote for an entire system and I called them to ask about stock on GPUs.
The shop was holding back a bunch of cards to provide people like us with systems without miners and scalpers taking them away.

The price for the GPU is pretty much near advertised price instead of the bloated ones that do appear listed on the webshop.

I think you should just be balsy and negotiate with a couple stores to see what they can offer you given you will buy all the parts you need from them.

Your other solution could be to get the parts and build it yourself. Then get a 2nd hand older GPU cheap as a temporary substitute.

A 1030 is not powerful enough to do proper work. I'd say at least a xx60 with 4GB VRAM.

Interesting, I'll see if I can find something- thanks for the tip!

I am aware that the xx30 is not a long term solution. The idea would be to have something that is not a real investment, just to get the PC running and then get a 3060 as soon as circumstances allow. But I have the feeling that will be way later than June...

Hi.

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O, fusion, compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better.

Both AMD and Nvidia Graphic Cards work with Resolve. Have you considered a cheap 2nm hand AMD Graphics Card as a temporary solution?

Thanks, that much is clear. That's basically why I'm asking this question :-)

I've been looking at 2nd hand websites, but without really knowing what to look for as an alternative. All I know about what you need in a graphics card, I know from reading (a lot, meanwhile). So I can't really tell what the difference in performance would be.

So maybe this would be follow-up questions:
* What are the minimal features a GPU should have to edit 1920p?
* Can you suggest some AMD card models that I could look for?

Thanks a lot for your comments!!

A 1030 could prove frustrating, even for HD. Impossible to say for sure, without knowing what you're doing. Cuts only, maybe.

As was pointed out, you can still buy assembled systems with 3000 series cards. HP makes a "gaming" computer ("Omen") that comes with the 3070, as well as models with lesser GPU cards. And there are custom builders (in the U.S.) who also sell systems with the 3070, without a huge markup.

An RX580 would be decent as a stop gap I think.

But they are not cheap either given their age.

I bought a GTX 1050i as a stopgap because I was just trialing Resolve and I didn't want to spend a ton of money on hardware until I was sure that Resolve was worth spending the money on. I've found it to work well enough on 1080p footage, although certain features such as Magic Mask on the color page are unusably slow. I'll be keeping my eye open for a 3060 card with 8 or 10GB of RAM, but I'm not in a big hurry as I'm still wading through all the training material. This is a hobby for me so time is not of the essence.

Still running a 980ti (only 1080p, no 4K) with medium colorgrading and sometimes effects, with multicam (3 cams), and I am happy at the moment. But then I am also just a hobbyist.

Thank you for your replies!

The rx580- doesn't look bad. But it costs more secondhand than the rtx3060ti's MSRP and that feels kind of funny. I'm not sure what to do because I have the feeling that the 30** series will not sell at their MSRP any time soon.

Edit: is the rx570 also to be conidered as a temporary solution?

So what about this: I was planning to get a Ryzen 3900x. Would it make sense to go for a 5600x instead and invest the difference in the graphics card?

Hi.

Back in October Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang did comment on the shortage of the RTX 3080 and 3090:

Thanks for the info, even if it's not much help in making the decision ;-)
