ExFAT causing problems on Mac

PostMon Mar 08, 2021 11:41 am

I sometimes have to share work with PC users so some of my working disks are ExFAT formatted. Recently I exported a project to an ExFAT formatted Samsung T5 drive. Importing on another machine alsways fails at the 11% mark. Both machines are Macs, same MacOS, same Resolve version 17. This drive was also my working drive for this project. I can't seem to open it even on the Mac it was initially created. What can I do to save this project? Maybe delete cache files?

Why are you saying this is caused by ExFAT? Have you tried the same operation on a mac formatted drive?

I have bad experiences with ExFAT disks and DaVinci on macOS. Today I never use ExFAT format for working in DaVinci.

Rather get one of the tools like Paragon to read the other system's files. BTW, MacOS can read NTFS, just not write to it without extra software. ExFAT is not very reliable.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

UPDATE

I copied all files to my iMac, then formatted the SSD as „MacOS (journaled)“. Copied everything back to the SSD and...could open the project. Weird isn’t it? Also Resolve runs smoother now (the external SSD is also used for cache, not the best idea I know).

That is also our experience. We use Paragon NTFS for Mac when we have to write to NTFS drives:

We avoid using NTFS-formatted drives on Mac for source material, Gallery stills or cache. We just copy the files over to our fast RAIDs, do the session, and then when we deliver, we write out the rendered files to the client's NTFS drives. If we had shared storage via 10gE or something, we'd try different things and figure out a setting that worked best between Mac & Windows.

another +1 for paragon, have it on all windoze workstations to read / write HFS, and on my MBP to write NTFS
it works so well that 99% of the time i have zero idea how a given client drive is formatted as it makes zero diffrence, plug anything into anything and off to the races
Like Marc, always always copy client assets to a RAID, and work from that
