10bit video clean feed question

PostThu Mar 04, 2021 12:09 pm

hello

I cannot find data on bit depth output from thunderbolt 1 ports of my late 2012 iMac where I use Resolve 16.2. Os is Mojave
Specifically, what kind of signal do I get on a 10bit 4K Lg Ultrafine with Video clean feed on, linked with thunderbolt (plus TB3>TB2/1 adapter) ?

the fullscreen feed is there on the external monitor but the Mac System Report indicates it as 24bit (8bit), just like the iMac display

I tried 10bit footage and targets inside Resolve though can't see any difference, just more overall dynamic (post-calibration) on the external Ultrafine.

Or is there a way to feed 10bit signal to the external monitor from a radeon RX580 egpu (itself linked with TB1 adapter to the iMac) ?

Does none of this work and I have to use an Ultrastudio?

Any info is appreciated

TB1 is not supported by the TB3 to TB2 adapter

and you need a video I/O for a correct signal
cMP 5.1 2x3,46/96GB/2x2TB SSD/4x4TB/7101A 4x2TB 970evo+/HP1344/BMD4k/RadeonVII
macOS 12.6.3
BMPCC 6k pro (7.9.1)
meike s35 cine 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm
resolve studio 18.1.4
mini panel
speed editor
desktop video 12.1
intensity pro 4k

If the SwitchresX daemon is installed one can select 8bit (millions) or 10bit (billions) from the drop down.

Good Luck

Thank you Howard! This worked for me. This means the old TB1 with miniDisplayPort interface can output clean 10bit, a possibility I overlooked till now. I tested the external monitor with targets and finally calibrated it for rec709. The difference is indeed there and System Report now confirms the panel supports 30bit.
Clean feed is now properly unleashed!
