change res of optimised media in the middle of a project?

PostSat Mar 06, 2021 11:23 pm

I'm in the middle of a multicam using optimized media. Could I change one of my optimized clips to a different resolution in the middle of the project? I don't want to redo or touch my actual multicams . How do you even delete the optimized media for just one clip?

You can change the resolution for Optimized Media at any time. Only new clips will be affected.

Management depends on which version of Resolve you using. Can you clarify?

I'm in 16 - last version of that whatever it was. My interest isn't in changing new clips but in changing clips I'm already using.

I'm in the middle of a multicam and while it started off working fine it is stuttering more and more as I go along. I have to close it and reopen or completely restart the computer to get smooth playback and that doesn't last too long. i got the impression from questions asked here that if it seemed to work fine for tests about 5 min long then it wouldn't be a problem to go further but that seems to be wrong.

However I wonder if its possible that my issue is something else though. I recently decided to make a separate database just for this multicam project. At first I got a "davinci doesn't have write permissions for the selected cache path" and none of my media appeared , But after restarting that went away and the media appeared normally . However I am still concerned because when I go to open the project I sometimes see the red "media offline" icon and other times I see a normal thumbnail. Is there possibly something wanky about my cache path?

You can't change the resolution of currently generated Optimized Media. You'd have to generate new Optimized Media at the new resolution.

That said, I have found Cineform at 1/4 resolution to be an excellent performing choice for Optimized Media.

I do recommend having (and use myself) a drive dedicated to Gallery/Cache/Optimized Media/Proxies. Not having that could affect performance.

Jim , Thanks again for your help.
I wasn't expecting to actually change the existing optimized media but rather can I make new OM with lower resolution in the middle of a project - particularely a multicam project . If I can, how would I go about it , first delete current OM then make new ones?

I currently have all my original media as wells as OM and cache files on a 4T Raid (7200RPM spinning disks, connected via Tbolt 1 > TBolt 3 adapter in the computer) but I do have a 2T SSD that I could put the OM and cache etc files on if that would help. Will Resolve be able to reconnect my OM & Cache if I change its location?

Would TBolt 3 Raid make a difference? I didn't think that would be a hangup.

You can just change the Project Settings and then generate new OM. It'll automatically overwrite the old files.

Do make sure the drive you're using for those files is the first once listed in Preferences>System>Media Storage.

I don't recommend doing this job with removable drives. I always recommend using only internal drives.
