[BIG BUG] Audio selection not working

PostFri Mar 05, 2021 10:20 pm

I have “selection follow playhead” on.
I have auto track selector on - on ALL tracks!!!

Still when playing the timeline it doesn’t select other than the video track!

No that is not the solution, since it is about selection of ALL the tracks :)

I think you need to learn about how track Auto-selectors interact with other functions in Resolve.
Selection Follows Playhead has priority for the video tracks.
If you lock all video tracks the audio track Auto-selectors will work for audio tracks.

The image you posted shows a video-only clip with non-associated audio underneath. If it was the linked Video clip audio it WOULD be selected. If you manually link the audio to the Video clip it will also be selected.

If you have answer to ALL posts here. do you mind SHOW it, since I am getting nothing from reading that you think I should read the manual. I shouldnt have to guess what the programmers are thinking with the functions, so I have to think logically on how should this be working!!

Selection Follows Playhead is designed to only select individual items, NOT everything under the playhead. Items can be individual video or audio clips or a video clip with linked audio.

The selection outcome depends upon the active Auto-select buttons.
Video tracks have priority over audio tracks when selection is made, thus the requirement to disable the video track Auto-select buttons if you want the selection to be an audio-only clip on an audio track.

Well - now I can't remember what I wanted to do.

Maybe it had something to do with "selecting" ALL tracks, where there is a clip, so I could CUT and paste it _ just using shortcutkeys. So what I have to do to make a selection with ALL tracks?

Ensure track selectors of clips you want to copy (video and audio both) are on. Then set timeline in and out points. Then ctrl-c.

As others here have suggested, you may find it helpful to get some basic instruction on how things work in Resolve, before posting.

There’s more than one way to “select” a target in Resolve. Like others have said, Selection Follows Playhead only selects one thing at a time. If you want to affect multiple clips, turn it off. With SPF off, and nothing selected on the timeline (command-shift-A to be sure), if you set an in and an out on the timeline, Resolve will SHOW you which clips a razor/split command will affect. This is all in the manual, which is why people keep recommending that you read it.

Notice the lighter area between the in and out points on V1 and V2? Those are the clips which will be affected. They'll be affected because their auto target controls are lit.

Notice how the thru edit only affects the tracks that were not dimmed?

This is what would've happened if I pressed backspace instead of command-B

See how it splits the clips at the extents of the in and out, at the edges of where the highlighted "selected" area was? Use the dimming/highlighting to give yourself a sense of how track targeting works in Resolve. You don't have to set in and out points, but you won't see the highlighting if you don't.

You're asking two different questions: 1) why aren't all tracks selected with the "selection follows playhead" option, and 2) why can't I mark all tracks.

1) "selection follows playhead" is designed to find and highlight the next clip it encounters. This is useful for sequentially editing individual clips. This feature is not meant for selecting all tracks. It's for individual clips.

2) if you can't mark all tracks, you're not using the right method. Note below, the in/out points and all track selectors are "on".

I have the selection follows playhead ON, because BEFORE v. 17 I could cut a clip WITH audio, and I could place it another place on the timeline... NOW that is broken and I don't know WHAT can get it back in version 17!

Turning on and off selection follows playhead is a function I use so frequently, that I keep it mapped to the main page of my streamdeck. If I didn't have a streamdeck, I'd make an easy shortcut for it; probably just plain "H" without modifiers, because I don't think that one's used by any of Resolve's default shortcuts.

do you care to make a video, where you cut out a piece from a timeline, and move it and paste it in... since I dont think you can do it WITHOUT having the "selected follow playhead" ON, because HOW can the playhead then select a clip if this is OFF??!

Selection Follows Playhead isn't necessary for any Cut, Copy or Paste operations. I leave that feature disabled as I just don't like it, but can do all the editing I need to.

Sure.

I don't have fancy screencap software, so it won't show you what buttons I pressed, but I'll just tell you.

I and O to set in and out

command-x to cut

then I pressed end to go to the end of the timeline, but I could've gone somewhere else

then I pressed command-v to paste, but I could've used command-shift-v to paste insert somewhere in the middle of a clip.

**edit**
oh, and I could've done command-shift-x to ripple cut, and Resolve would've closed that gap.

Here's another example, not using SFP, this time singling out an individual track, copying a chunk out, and moving it somewhere else on the timeline, while carrying its audio, but leaving other audio unaffected. For this one, I actually went back and overlaid the shortcuts in Resolve to make it more clear.

Is this helpful, or are you trying to do something else?

THANKS, really helpful...

here is my video of the same you are doing - I just wanted ALL tracks... it failed... since the in/out point, is not highlighted after making the in and out.

I havn't played with or without "follow selection playhead" - but turning it on or off. Still don't fix the in/out selection on the timeline, like in your video, where it highlight the area. In my version 17.0 Alpha, it DON't highlight the selection.

After you have your in/out, do you press something to "highlight" the timeline?

So in your example, it's the orange outline around the clip that's showing you what will happen when you press delete or command-b or whatever. The orange outline always takes precedence. It's called "direct selection" and it comes from both directly clicking on a clip, or by using selection follows playhead. You can de-select things by pressing command-shift-A first. Doing so works, even with SFP ON, but when it's ON, you have to be careful about moving the playhead, because as soon as you do, the clip will get re-selected.

I did them manually. I dropped "Text+" titles over top of the screencapture I recorded after re-importing it into Resolve. Screencapping that would be kind of meta, and hurts my head, but hopefully this description makes sense. :)

No, you don't have to press anything, but if you don't see it, it's because something on your timeline is directly-selected. In other words, if any clip on your timeline has an orange outline, you won't see the highlighting.

Ahh, don't make sense - why is highlight (orange outline of any clip) a problem to have in/out hightlight the timeline?

I just tried to uncheck "selections follows playhead" and then there is no problems. I would say it is a BUG, since this should be the SAME with or without "selections follows playhead".

I had to look up - what it does...
Using Selection Follows Playhead: When you turn on “Selection Follows Playhead” so
that all clips intersecting the position of the playhead are automatically selected, clips
on tracks with Auto Select disabled will not be selected.

and that is what I am saying that is is NOT working. since it DOESN'T select ALL tracks clips that is intersection with.

Because this in/out is the SAME solution to how to edit. ONE is 100% NOT doing as in the manual, and the other is still with bugs, if you have the "selection follows playhead" since it should overrule and make the in/out regardless of the situation.

but Thanks... this is the dialog I am looking for, because you help me find the bugs.
