Grading issue using output transform

PostTue Mar 16, 2021 10:16 am

Working with Red material, a good way is to use the IPP2 transforms as output transforms and grade before this transform in order to keep RedWideGamut/LOG3G10 in a kind of master format. This way, it's possible to change the output transform to something else, like switching between Rec2020 and Rec709.

But there's a big problem with this method in that any adjustments before the output node requires minute changes and the precision is really bad. For instance, qualifiers work much better after the output transform since the saturation and separation are higher than on the LOG3G10 material. And all changes to any adjustments are not proportional to the tool.

Working with the transform node as an input node is better, but then you risk crushing blacks and clipping whites in a way that breaks the whole point of using it as an output transform.

Can the tools be adjusted to be more precise? Or is it impossible to achieve this?

with RED 99.999% of the time i'd go with ACES, has it's own limitations, the strengths out weigh the weaknesses in my hands
