BMPCC my first impressions

PostMon Aug 26, 2013 5:16 pm

Hi to all,

Got my camera last week and here are my first impressions...

Great camera, really nice footage (especially with Film Convert), Dynamic range is somewhat over-estimated but, all in all it's pretty impressive for such a small camera!

Definitely need some way to stabilise it... Way to small to be used straight handheld (professionally).

The biggest draw back is the screen... It's really bad! It's feels less that 8 bit... Just bad. But I guess that's what I paid for!

Here are a few things I'd like to see improve:

Battery life... It's about 1 hour (general use) recording or not. So get a few extra batteries and an external charger... If not you have to charge the battery inside the camera.

Focus peaking... Not very accurate. Can't say exactly how it's not very accurate. It seems very "crude". Also, I was shooting at a friends wedding this weekend and the focus peaking doesn't seem to work in "low light" situations.

Cards... Please publish a list of cards that are compatible. I bought 1 Delkin card that didn't work (and it should of worked at 41mb/s)... So don't follow the non official lists on the internet. For example, 35MB/s cards will most likely not work for PR 422. I bought 3 Sandisk 64gb 45MB/s and these work fine... So anything above should normally work. And, I'd stick with Sandisk.

Recording... You never know when your card will fill up. Very annoying! They should add a feature to know how much space there is on your card.

Autofocus... I tried it with a Lumix 20MM 1.7 Pancake lens. The autofocus is really slow. It might me my lens.

Didn't see any weird highlight orbs yet...

So that's it for now. Mind you I bought the camera for fun. I probably wont use it to shoot anything professional, most likely will use it to record my kid doing kids stuff. So for me it works almost perfectly. Also, I mostly use Zeiss and Leica M mount (manual lenses).

So where can we submit feature requests? Do I have to send an email to support? Any info on this would be great!

Thanks!

When you register the camera online with BM, they ask you for, "What features you would like added".

SD card space is a good one, did not think about that
I asked for audio meters, as I think this is a "Big" one.
I alway use the computer to format cards anyway before a shoot.
I found focus peaking with the Zoom in" (press OK button twice quickly) works very good, but I will rest this against my Zacuto EVF today, to see if they agree and get a sharp focus.
I also noticed auto focus a little slow worth Pany/Leica DG 45mm lens, but it was quicker with the Leica D14-50 zoom, may be a issue with lens zoom motors and or lens communicating issues with camera. Newer lenses have faster motors, will try my 11-16 Tokina to see if slowermon PCC than the Nikon. However, I usually like to "Pull" my own focus, but in some situations, auto focus is nice.

Charles B, how is your lens mount, do lenses click in firm, with any play? Mine has slight rotational play as locking pin has some play in it -- does Yours? Thanks for replying, you can also send me a PM if you prefer.

Still liking the camera so far.

Thanks for the insight!

My lens mount seems very tight (in you are referring to the original mount). My Leica adaptor is made by Voigtlander and there's not allot of play in the configuration. So all in all it's seems really good!

Thanks!

CharlesB,
So you can not turn the lens at all after it "clicks" in, no play? Does your locking pin "wiggle" any when you touch it with a finger (without lens)?

I tired a Panasonic/Leica lens and the Olympus Four Thirds to MFT adapter, as well as Novaflex, all move slightly when lens is rotated.
Thanks, I think I need my lens mount adjusted or?

I don't have my camera with me today... But I'll check for those specific signs ASAP.

Thanks
