How to share timeline with audio editor for post mix?

PostFri Mar 19, 2021 11:19 pm

Hi,
Trying to work out a new workflow with an audio editor. We are seeing if it is possible for him to utilize davinci as well. He already has the audio files so was hoping to share a project with him and he would be able to open it and link his audio files and go straight to work. Problem is the audio files are synced to Red r3d files and davinci wont allow him to play the timeline without also relinking to the Red files. He can obviously see the audio files that are standalone clips just not the audio files that were synced to our video files. What are we missing? Hoping to avoid always giving him an entire hard drive of all of the content.

have you tried creating an audio AAF workflow?

Obviously if the main audio is connected to r3ds, the simple way to have them open it and go is to give them a copy of the r3ds.

Otherwise you are going to have to create new audio media and give them a list.

Perhaps a version of the timeline that only has the audio tracks, and a pass through media management?

In R17, generate proxy media for all of the r3ds in a format that's friendly for him to decode and small enough to send him over dropbox or similar. In the project manager, right-click on the project and select "export project archive." Choose a location, uncheck "media files," uncheck "render cache," but check "proxy media." .zip the archive and send it to him.

When he opens it, he first needs to unzip, then open it from his Resolve Project manager by right-clicking in the background and selecting "Restore Project Archive." If he turns on "use proxy media if available" in the playback menu, he'll be able to see the video playback, as well as hear it in Fairlight.

Because the Fairlight viewer is so small, he won't need super high-quality video. It's really just for reference, so that he can time sound effects and get an idea of what's going on in the video at any particular moment.

If his hardware will accelerate h.265 decode without interfering with audio processing, that'd be the smallest file to send, but you should test it first. If it's either too choppy for him, or takes too long for you to encode, it'd be better to go with something like prores proxy on a mac or some flavor of dnx on PC.

Yes that's the problem, an export option for Fairlight would be nice.
So far I have exported AAF for Protools, but recently my audio guy decided to try his hand at Fairlight. (we work remotely)
I could send him an AAF, but since he's going to be working in Fairlight, it would be nice if he had sound effects superimposed, track volume etc.

My workflow.
Export the whole movie to DNxHR LB for video / audio pilot.

Duplicate the timeline. Delete all video, leaving only the audio tracks.
Export using Media Management with settings.
- Timelines - Transcode
- check your audio timeline
- Used Media and trim keeping xx handles
- Video - unfortunately it is not possible to export audio only
Quicktime - h264 - Quality - 5 kb/s (we don't need this video so quality is not important, it is important that the file is as small as possible)
- Audio - Linear PCM - Same as Source channels of audio

Audio guy must import created timeline, and DNxHR LB video.
Then open the timeline and place DNxHR LB on the video track.
