Resolve 17 strange behaviour

PostTue Mar 02, 2021 7:45 pm

Hi!

Today I've installed Resolve 17 and now, a project started on Resolve 16 presents a strange behaviour.

I've attached a picture with my node structure. In node 'A' there is a curves only with the green channel. In node 'B' there is a curves only with the blue channel. Layer mixer is in 'add' mode.

With Davinci Resolve 16 everything worked perfectly but with Davinci Resolve 17 image is black and white and I don't know why.

Could someone help me?

If you do the same thing in a new 17 project, what happens?

Hi, sorry for answering now but I hadn't seen your response until now (I'm new to the forums).

I started a new project and happens exactly the same: a black and white image when before it used to be in color.

Any other clues?

Any help will be very appreciate it.

Best,

Sebastià

And here is the project.

Let me know if you need anything else.

It's the first time I share a still and a project.

I think you might need staff help on this. May have to wait a bit.

Hi Sebastià

Setting a node colorspace is valid only for the scope of the node - the output of the node goes back to timeline colorspace. So an HSL node (with luma set to 0) will change to timeline (RGB), resulting in a luma=0 (i.e. black) image output. You can observe the same (correct, black-and-white) behavior with Resolve 16 if you were to toggle this node's space to timeline and back to HSL.

The solution is to use two colorspace transform nodes (timeline to LAB and back) to keep the mix in LAB - this lets your setup work as intended.

I'm not sure that I've understood what you are saying. Where should I put this extra two nodes? Before and after the node labeled as "Chroma"? Could you explain it a little bit more detailed? I'm a noob...

(I followed this tutorial:

With previous DaVinci Resolve versions it worked as intended. No changes in new versions?)

Best!

I think I understand this part. However, in the video I attached, the 'Chroma' node is almost black but the results are fine. Davinci Resolve 17 hasn't the same behaviour.
The solution is to use two colorspace transform nodes (timeline to LAB and back) to keep the mix in LAB - this lets your setup work as intended.

1) Where should I use these two color space transform nodes? I've tried several combinations unsuccessfully.
2) Which should be the settings of the first one? I used these settings: Input Color Space: Use Timeline; Input Gamma: Use Timeline; Output Color Space: Lab (CIE); Output Gamma: Use timeline. Are these the correct settings? Should I left Gamma untouched? Should I change anything on Tone Mapping, Gamut Mapping or Advanced settings?
3) Which should be the settings of the second one? I used these settings: Input Color Space: Lab (CIE); Input Gamma: Use Timeline; Output Color Space: Use Timeline; Output Gamma: Use timeline. Are these the correct settings? Should I left Gamma untouched? Should I change anything on Tone Mapping, Gamut Mapping or Advanced settings?
Best,
