(VST) Audio Effects Order

It seems that when you insert VST effects, they are running in parallel, rather than as a chain. With the Inspector, you can change the order in which they appear, but doing so doesn't seem to change the signal-flow. For example, I put a gate after my reverb (set to a high setting), but the reverb is not gated; the reverb performs the same no matter where I put the gate.

Is there a way to change this setup (without doing something fancy with the busses)?

Also, I take it the "Insert" button on the channel strip just bypasses all the effects when deselected, but I'm not certain.

Finally, I'm working on a guitar part that was recorded mostly dry. I'm accustomed to working in a dedicated DAW (video is new to me, and I'm so grateful for this fantastic free software!). So far, Fairlight has been nice to work with (crossfading is good, gain-riding is good, etc.), though I do need to be sure to use resource-light plugins. At any rate, my question is: Should I just stick to my DAW for now if I want to use several third-party VSTs, even for just mixing/editing a single guitar part, or are there settings/workflow solutions here I'm just not seeing?

My own audio work is pretty basic. BMD have offered us some free training materials. Might be worth going through the Fairlight book if you want to move you work over to Resolve.
