(FIXED) P6K Pro & Latest Firmware are in BETA for BRAW

PostMon Jan 25, 2021 12:17 pm

Hi,

It would be great if we had been told that the latest camera firmware for URSA Mini Pro 4.6K are a BETA firmware and that we will need a BETA of the BRAW SDK to play the Blackmagic .BRAW files : version 1.X won't play them you will need BRAW 2.X. That also means for Premiere Pro you either need to installer BRAW Studio BETA https://www.autokroma.com/blog/BETA-For ... Science-V5 (also for URSA 12K and Color Gen V5) or BRAW Player, Thumbnail & PrPro plugins 2.0 BETA from BMD website.

We have lots of users discovering at the last moment their footage is not compatible with regular versions. In BRAW Studio regular version it usually means displaying a yellow frame.

By telling everyone to update and not saying the firmware is in BETA, you force your users to use a BETA version of the SDK. BETA are not made for production. It would have been fine if the official release was out soon but it has been many months it is in BETA and no official roadmap for the release of the 2.0 / 2.1

So I am opening up this post to spread the word, hopefully if users know about this and don't want to use a BETA they won't update the firmware

Regards
Antoine

As we discovered back in August 2020 it also affects URSA Mini Pro G1 with Firmware 6.9.4 (and above most probably)

We've found a solution for this in the interim!
The issue is caused when shooting in the new ISO values introduced in the latest 6.9.4 firmware (like ISO 640 and 1250).
The stable SDK in the BRAW Studio plugin doesn't know what to do as these ISO's don't seem to be valid in pre-2.0 beta SDK.
The way I fixed this was by using the latest Davinci Resolve 17 Beta to create sidecar files - changing all the invalid ISO's to 800.
Upon re-opening Premiere, Autokroma BRAW Studio Plugin magically works again with these files as they now read with valid ISO's!
Unfortunately, if you edit in Resolve, you're going to have to use the 17 Beta for now :(

And one more reason we have been moving to Resolve. Adobe refuses to "natively support" the modern BRAW camera codec. BRAW has now been around for years. Adobe has bypassed BRAW and natively supported far newer codecs. If you shoot BRAW you are left to pay for and struggle with plug-ins. The poster's plug-in is a good plug-in but as noted, you are caught in between 2 different competitors.

Do you think Adobe would have kept the BRAW SDK up to date as much as us at Autokroma and Blackmagic official releases ? I doubt it ;)

Yes but there was a particular issue with a new parameter that we were concerned about. Now it's better and we are more confident 2.0 to be stable

Note to everyone reading here : BRAW 2.0 official release is finally out ! Consider this issue fixed. Thanks Blackmagic ! BRAW Studio also has been updated to version 2.4.0 with that new SDK

Nice one, thanks Antoine!

I'm midway through a doc that has a blanket grade from gen4 colour. In the next few weeks, I'm going to start the master grade. Is there a way to switch all my media to gen5 in Premiere? Or is that something I'd need to do on a clip by clip basis?

It's 1hr30, so clip by clip might make it not worth doing on this particular project.

Hi Nick,
On Premiere Pro using Blackmagic plugin you would need to do this item by item yes. Using BRAW Studio (with its PrPro Panel) you can use Partial Presets where you tick only the Color Science Version 5 for example, and you would select all your clips (either in Project Panel OR on your Timeline) and batch modify all your clips at once by applying the partial preset created ;) ! More information here https://www.autokroma.com/blog/BRAW-Stu ... al-presets

We could have a more practical way to do this (without Presets) in the future but for now it's already a few clicks away with Partial Presets, so I guess it's already good enough !

That's great! Thanks. I'm using the Braw Studio Panel - and love it...

I'm not by my project right now, so can't test. But in order for me to estimate the time it'll take to convert to gen5, would the way you suggest leave all ISO and WB settings as they are already set? Or revert them to how they were shot?

No it would leave them as is. You untick all the checkboxes, and tick the Color Science Version checkbox. When you apply the presets, only the Color Version will be changed, the rest will stay intact
