Speed Editor with Windows

Hi folks,

I've just got my Speed Editor - landed here in the Falklands is a bit of a journey for the poor wee thing.

It seems to be dead on arrival.

I've plugged it in via usb-c cable to my iPad Pro charger for 24 hours.

I've got no lights.
When plugging it into my laptop (Dell M6800) there is no usb chime.
Nothing appears in the windows Device Manager.
Nothing appears in the Davinci Control Panels application.

I can plug and unplug my DR Micro Control Panel, and I get usb chimes, Device Manager info, and it gets listed in the DCP.

I have tried pressing CUT and SMTH CUT for a few seconds.
I've unplugged and plugged it into 4 different usb slots while Resolve is running.

Scratching my head here.

Questions for you:

1) Did you get a USB-C cable with the editor ? I didn't.
2) When you plug it in to your computer, do any of the lights work ? Flash on and off ? Anything ?
3) When you plug it in to your computer, do you get the usb 'chimes' even if Resolve is not running?

I get the idea of it only coming to life when Resolve is loaded - pretty smart, but is there a way to see if it has even been successfully charged up in the first place ?

I don't even care, at this point, about setting up a bluetooth connection.

Is it possible that having the DR Micro Control Panel installed first, that has stuffed the installation/drivers whatever for the speed editor?

1) I got a 142 cm / 56" (w/o plugs) ∅5,6 mm USB-C to USB-C cable in the Package [DV/RES/BBPNLMLEKA 9 338716 006988]. The package also contains a note by BMD stating that a SD card is not still contained to reduce waste. Several YouTubers tell that the package doesn't contain a cable. The Speed Editor works (and charges) well on USB-A with an USB-A to USB-C cable, that is not included.

2) I don't see any feedback whether the Speed Editor is charging (nor documentation for the installation process), no matter whether it is connected to a USB-charger or connected by USB to the computer. One of the red lights in the radio button line {SHTL|JOG|SCRL} turns on when the Speed Editor is connected to DaVinci Resolve, i.e., you must start Resolve to see any sign of life on the Speed Editor itself.

3) I'm not sure whether plain waiting could have accomplished the task, but I needed to connect via Bluetooth. Just scan for BT devices and choose «DaVinci Keyboard» ---nothing else to be done exept for the scan and connecting the DaVinci Keyboard, though you need BTLE, i.e., a BT4 or later receiver--- to get the USB-Connection working afterwards. You'll see the Speed Editor in the Help -> DaVinci Control Panels Setup once it is connected, with a round button below. This button most likely leads to a software update. While updating the software the LEDs are off again. As soon as you close DaVinci Resolve the LEDs are also switched off.

4.) When the Speed Editor is connected to Bluetooth the percentage of the battery charge is shown in the Windows Settings -> Devices -> Bluetooth & other devices. The shown percentage doesn't update while the Speed Editor is not connected via Bluetooth: it will charge, but the shown percentage won't increase until you enable Bluetooth, again.

I got the note about the missing SD card too. Not a problem, I can queue up the download for out-of-hours; we have eye-wateringly high internet charges where I live. Roll on Starlink

Makes sense about getting one of {SHTL|JOG|SCRL} lights on. Since one of those actions determines what the wheel does. Mine shows nothing.

The only thing I can get to show up in the Help -> DaVinci Control Panels Setup is my micro panel

I suspect that my laptop is a little too old for BTLE - haven't even bothered to investigate it, to be honest with you.

Does your windows do the 'usb chime' when you plug the Speed Editor in or remove it ?

At this point, my gut feeling is that the battery is not connected and not charging.

I don't hear the 'Chimes' on connecting or disconnecting anything, although I can play these very chimes in the Sound settings. I'm not sure where one could deactivate them except for the Sound settings.

As far as I see, the DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel is connected to Resolve by the DaVinciPanelDaemon.exe. This is not how the Speed Editor gets addressed by Resolve. Also, the Speed Editor works fine being connected via Bluetooth, but the DaVinci Control Panels Setup would state "No DaVinci control panels found". This makes sense as a software update via Bluetooth might be assumed quite tricky.

On the Windows side whole the BT-way uses generic drivers manufactured by Microsoft, while the USB-way needs one specific driver component manufactured by Blackmagic Design (signed by Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher). I cannot assure that, but it looks like those drivers are provided by Windows Update – and I find several deferral notices in the eventlog about Windows Update not delivering timely around the time of my installation. This would require a connection to Windows Update to enable the USB connection to the Speed Editor. The Drivers are located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Control Panels\DriverUsb\DaVinciKeyboards. You might want to take a look into the Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-PnP/Configuration and Microsoft-Windows-DeviceSetupManager/Admin eventlogs.

The screenshot below shows an example for the target configuration, with (A) the Generic Attributes Client to the BTLE connection, (B) the USB connection powered by the driver mentioned above, and (C) the device used effectively when connected via BT only. For me it seems like a combination of (A+B) is necessary to initiate a fully working USB connection. It also seems like the update of the Speed Editor software is not effectively finished until once (A) was connected. Once (C) was enabled by BT only use from within Resolve, it might be neccessary to delete the devices before (B) can be reenabled, later. I might have observed this bogusly since ... Note: the USB-C socket of the Speed Editor features sort of two plugin steps. The plug already fits and holds upon the first level, but it not effectively establishes contacts until a second, harder push into the socket.

The screenshot above shows the charging percentage, though the 0% in the red cross solely show the non-functionality of the paired connection (Wacom needs 'BT IntuosPro' being paired to work, that in turn not shows the charging percentage using intrinsic means of Windows, but in the Notification Area of the Task Bar with the corresponding service on a current Windows 10 running in a "Windows Vista" context).

I've just got one thing left to try, before returning it

I can get hold of a new mac laptop, and I'm just going to see if it's bluetooth sees the keyboard.
If it does, I'll need to get a BLE adaptor for my laptop.

If it doesn't see it, and the thing has been on charge for 24hrs, then it's definitly DOA.

HOWEVER, it has totally nailed the problem for me.

I followed the instructions for installing the bluetooth V5 drivers (my laptop may had been on the cusp), and after a restart, I get this:

1) NO NOISE plugging the keyboard in
2) I GET LIGHTS when loading Resolve!!!!!!!!
3) I even get the COOL as UNICORN POO-POO shtl/jog/scrl
