Color space 2D animation

PostMon Mar 29, 2021 9:15 pm

Hello everybody,
I hope you are doing well :)

I will soon work on a 2D animation short film and series, and I will edit the project in Davinci Resolve Studio.

The team work in Photoshop to create the backgrounds, In TV paint for the animation, and we mostly export some png.

I would like to know if I need to modify the Default Color Management of DaVinci Resolve Studio. Do I need to choose a specific Color Management or anything else?

The short film will be shown in festivals, streaming platforms, but also in cinemas and tv.

I am sorry, I am new to this and the only thing I know about Color Management, is that Color management exists ;)

Thank you very much for your time and wisdom,

Have a pleasent day,

Alex

Ooooh, that's a bit like asking someone to explain Quantum Mechanics in 50 words or less.

Maybe the best approach is to go through the Color training manual offered by BMD. ;)

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Your choice will be constrained by the display(s) you have.

If you have no external displays and you're just working off your computer displays you may as well leave color managent off because what you'll see in these deliverables you named will not match what you see on your screen. Color management is a very wide subject. It's hard to give a prescription without knowing more about your setup and the deliverables.

As a low end minimum, you could set your Photoshop working color space to Rec.709 with full levels, and keep the proof color preview always enabled.

In Resolve you would keep RCM off.

You would tell people making the DCP that the files are Rec.709 with 2.4 gamma.

I understand. I ask these questions, because I will need to do the editing and exports. I want to be sure not to create any problem...

This is the monitor I work on:
https://www.amazon.ca/-/fr/gp/product/B ... =UTF8&th=1

I work on a MacBook Pro. The monitor is connected via HDMI. Every Color tweaking I do, I do them on the Benq.

The Benq is set to DCI-P3

All the photoshop we are working on are presently on: srgb IEC61966-2.1

All of this is new for me, so I try to understand learn as much as I can :)

I am also watching some videos to understand what is Color management.

Again, thank you!

You should definitely have your display calibrated first. I don't know if this one can really hit the P3 primaries and the gamma. In theory you could also setup your working color space to DCI-P3. You could also work in Resolve using DCI-P3 as your timeline color space and output color space. You can also set the timeline color space to a wider gamut like Arri/Log-C.

Any media you import, like your Photoshop generated media you'd tag as DCI-P3 manually if that's indeed what's inside. I'm not sure that Photoshop saves the color space and gamma information in the embedded metadata. Maybe it does for EXR.

When you deliver files for DCP you'd keep your output setting in P3-DCI. When you deliver for TV you'd switch to Rec.709 2.4 gamma.
