Finding Avid commands into Resolve

PostFri Apr 02, 2021 9:05 am

Hello everyone,
I used to edit on Avid Media Composer and only color grade in Resolve.
I recently switched to Resolve for Editing and I find it very refreshing !

However, I have trouble finding some features or at least some equivalents.

 In Avid media composer, I can select a clip with some I/O points, and then Lift/Extract/Copy (ALT + z,x,c) into the source monitor so that I can insert/overwrite the clip elsewhere on the timeline.

Is it available in Resolve ? If not, what's the most efficient way to get the same result ?

Thank You !

The biggest mistake I made after switching from Premiere Pro was thinking that my previous experience meant I could just jump into a new NLE without difficulty.

Nope.

As a new user, your first course of action should be to complete some Resolve training. The Beginner's Guide and Advanced Editing are an excellent groundwork to get you moving smoothly. ;)

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Funny, I have had the exact same experience coming from AVID to Resolve as an editor. This particular command was part of the reason you can cut so fast on AVID. You can get a similar result in Resolve using the copy and paste command and then trim the pasted clip in the timeline. I have not found a way to load into the source monitor with the copy command.

Jim's advice about lessons is well taken. I find Resolve to be an excellent editor but I have not gotten fast enough on it after about six months to want to tackle a professional job yet. I am almost there. I'm just too proficient on AVID and my clients have expectations about getting cuts out.

There is both cut (Comman-X) and paste (Command-V) and ripple cut Command-Shift-X) and insert paste (Command-Shift-V) in Resolve, they just don't load clips into the source viewer, but into the clipboard instead. If it is a single clip you can do a match frame (F) before cutting — the clip will be loaded into source with both in and out it has on the timeline. If it is a section between in and out, spanning several clips you have just live with it being a fantom for a few seconds.

Copying to source monitor is such a powerful Avid feature, particularly with shortcuts for patching + autopatching enabled - there's workarounds in PP and Resolve but nothing comes close.

Same goes for editing to waveforms. As much as Resolve is great for Colour + Fusion, + editorial has some great features, it still needs some serious feedback from editors using it day in + out to get close to the speed and flexibility of Avid FOR editorial (avid is terrible for captions + effects + pretty weak for colour)

You have control of where stuff gets pasted from the clipboard both in Resolve and Premiere.

I'm with you. What I miss most is my 'focus' function (zooming into the timeline to your playhead).
I normally have that mapped to F4 in MC and keep hitting that in Resolve, to no effect.

Sadly, the Zoom presets in Resolve cannot be mapped to a key as of now.

As for your question: copy (Command-C) copies to the clipboard and you can paste the clip anywhere you want. The only difference is that you don't see the clip appear in the viewer.

Yes but not to the extent that you do in Avid - their method allows patching to non contiguous tracks plus allows you to chose what part of the 'copy' gets pasted.

Have you used copy to source monitor + autopatch in Avid?

Yes, I have. I know what you are talking about.

I spent a long time trying to get the Avid Media Composer keyboard setting as close as I could, the default one is sorely lacking. I believe that the attached one is about 95% there. Whilst I agree with everyone that you should try and adapt to the native nle, my whole system is Avid centric and since I use an Avid keyboard too, it helps to move to DVR for finishing. I can take no responsibility for this template but if it is of some help I make it freely available. Save as a .txt file -Avid Media Composer custom.txt - since I cannot attach as an actual file. Copy only the text between the lines and then import via Keyboard customisation (the 3 dots to the top right):
