Re-Enabling Timelines... No option !?

PostSat Apr 03, 2021 5:26 am

Resolve 17.1.1, Win10x64, Studio

I created a folder at the same level as Master in my Media Pool called Timelines. I have 4 timelines in it. I have disabled two timelines and they appear in the Media Pool at the top, but not in the Timelines Smartbin, which I believe is normal behavior. When I right click on an enabled timeline in the Smartbin Timeline folder, I see an option to "Disable Timeline", as expected. However, I DO NOT see such an option when right clicking on the same timeline in MY timeline folder (not the Smartbin).

The problem is that when I right click on either of the two disabled timelines in MY timeline folder, I see only the following options:
- Add Timelines Bin
- Import >
- Delete
- Open in Timelines
- Flags >

It's a VERY ODD contextual menu that doesn't seem to fit the role. Definitely not helpful.

The REAL problem is though, that I can't seem to find a way to re-enable my disabled timelines. There is no Enable Timeline option in the right click menu in either MY timelines bin or the Timelines Smartbin. Note that in another project, where I disable a timeline in a folder under Master, I see both the Disable Timeline AND the Enable Timeline options when right clicking on a timeline file.

I believe this is a bug, and now I appear to have two timelines I can no longer access due to (apparently) a misfortunate bin I named Timelines at the same level as Master.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Also, don't do this.

Hi Shane

Setting up a similar bin structure and a couple of test timelines, I can't see this - with or without the timelines smart bin.

Can you add a link to your DRP and let us know which timelines show this issue?

I think it does not work if you're using a Timeline Bin that's automatically created with General Options -> Use Timeline Bin. I'd like to see these "Enable" and "Remove" options available there as well.

Where are you finding this option. I don't see it anywhere in v17. If this is indeed what I'm doing, then it works enough to let you disable a timeline, just not re-enable it.

Yes, with THAT structure, it works fine. Take a look at what I have. Notice that my Timelines bin is not inside my Master bin (for some reason). I'm pretty sure I created it. The screenshot shows what I see when I right-click on the disabled Timeline 2. There is no option to Enable. If I set it up like you have, it works.

I also restored a backup of the project.db from last night before I disabled Timeline 1, and Exported that timeline using the new Timeline Export feature. I then opened the latest project.db file and imported the timeline into the Master folder, which appeared as expected. The only problem (and a major issue), is that even though the timeline has all the clips in place, each clip references the same clip as the very first clip on the timeline. In other works, my entire timeline is a bunch of clips of the exact same clip!

Has anybody reported any issues with the export/import timeline feature yet?

OK, so I think I saved myself from myself. I don't know how or why there is a Timelines bin at the same level as Master, or whether or not I created it. This project was started in V16, so it may have been done in that version. However, it is a problem if you disable any timeline in that bin because you can't re-enable it. That apparently is a bug.

I tried exporting the enabled timelines from a backup project file (before I disabled them), and importing them into the current project, but they were all badly corrupted.

I then Exported the rogue Timelines BIN that held my 4 timelines (2 disabled), and Imported that bin back in UNDER Master, and, even though that imported bin contained everything in Timeline AND Master, it did have the timelines and when I right-clicked on them, I was able to ENABLE them again.

I'm back in business, but there are some bugs for BMD to work out in V17.1.1 still.

Now, I'm back to trying to figure out why all of a sudden I started seeing various frames all throughout the timeline flashing Media Offline! 8-)

When the option below is used (and it is for you), we cannot Disable or Enable timelines. Click below to help change that.

Of course, I couldn't find it because it is under the COLOR options in the General Options tab of Project Settings... right where one would look for it... and grayed out. That explains where that timeline folder came from, and I agree Jim, the consistency of operation overall could be improved a bit. Perhaps that will come. I guess you can't turn this off once you've turned it on and created your first timeline in a project, which explains why I couldn't move the timelines out of that bin either.

Here's the catch-22. This functionality is poorly implemented. You can Open a New project, select Use Timelines Bin, Add a New Timeline, and in the Smart Bins Timeline bin, right-click on your timeline and click Disable. It disappears from the Smart Bin. Go back to the Use Timelines Bin bin and right-click on your now-disabled timeline, and you don't have the option to Enable it. So, you've just lost your timeline, like I did. The solution I found was to export the timeline bin and import a copy it back into the Master bin where you can then re-enable your timeline copy before cleaning up all the duplicate media pool items created for the original timeline).

That is correct. I'm going to have to break myself of the habit of enabling a Timeline Bin and just doing it the other way so that I can Enable/Disable Timelines.

The Timelines are Color timelines, in that they're for a DaVinci Resolve Color session. If you wrap your thinking around the way Resolve works, there is a logic to it.

I think that's a step backwards. Vote for the request to make everything with when using a Timelines Bin. Get your coworkers to do the same.

You are a true colorist, aren't you Marc! :D Don't you know that Resolve is much more than just Color now? ;-)

Actually, I think of Editing as more Timeline and Color as more Clips myself. I do believe that is where a lot of the inconsistencies come from; integrating a bunch of new stuff into a Color application, and trying to make it "fit". It'll get better. IN the meantime, I'll just continue to hunt and peck at things.
